I'm really looking forward to the next parts and hope you'll give Blaine a happier ending than the real Steven.

Oh my God, don't worry. I'm intentionally putting parts in the sequel set several years in the future so I can point to it and be all, "Are you paying attention, universe? This is what we call an acceptable ending."

And now I have to apologise because you've set me off about the unfairness of real life and there's no way for me to stop the rant that's going to unleash itself. You can skip it, I don't mind :)

It's stupid to get so pissed off at what really amounts to a series of shitty coincidences, because I think that might be how a lot of crazy people get their start. I can't help it though, it's just...it's stupid to say an already horrible situation was cursed, because bad is bad, right? It doesn't get worse than what happened to those two kids. But when you look at it and realize that even after Parnell was caught so many horrible things happened that were out of everyone's control? It boggles my mind. And honestly? I do get a little pissed off at the universe/statistical probablility/whatever when I think about it.

Parnell was never tried for what he did to Stayner because of narrow-minded, outdated ideas on how to handle assault, and he only got a joke of a jail sentence for what he did to Timothy White. Out of his accomplices the one with the greatest culpability never got so much as a slap on the wrist because she was a woman. Parnell lived longer than both his victims combined, who both left young families behind after being done in by completely random circumstances. Bad genetics and a car crash? Really?!

And Stayner lived one fucking third of his life with his kidnapper! Not to mention what happened with his older brother after he died. God! This is a friggin' Greek Tragedy, it shouldn't be anyone's real life.

...Yeah. This is why I used the Stayner story instead of making a fic based on general research. Like you said, it's haunting.

Ranting aside (sorry again!), I'm glad you've enjoyed the story so far :) The rest will be up soon.
