A while ago I started to make a Beginner's Guide to Firefly, mainly because I was bored and had nothing else to do (these are the things one must do when dealing with a long-winded preacher). It's taken a lot longer than I thought to finish it, but until I do, here's something else for you. Read it. I'm serious. I even put in pictures so you won't get bored. And yes, I realize the season is over, but I understand they're showing reruns on UPN, and if you're Canadian, they're airing it on CTV. If you still can't catch it, download it. It's too good not to watch.
Meet Veronica Mars. Not too long ago she was sweet, happy, and popular. Now she is 17 years old, snarky, cynical, and everyone hates her. Like, a lot. Veronica works for her father (a private investigator) as a "receptionist". Reception work has changed a lot over the years, since Veronica spends more time photographing cheating spouses in flagrante than she does answering phones. She is also the go-to girl at school if you have a problem in need of solving (ew, not like THAT). Just don't let anyone see you talking to her. You aren't the only one with a dirty mind, and Veronica's gotten herself an interesting reputation.
Veronica goes to Neptune High School, located in the town of Neptune, California. If you go to Neptune High, you are either a millionaire, or you work for one. Veronica is not a millionaire, but back when she first started going to high school, she was one of the few "poor" kids invited into the 09er circle. 09er = the kids rich enough to live in the 0909 zip code.
Meet Keith Mars, Veronica's father. Keith is a private investigator, but he used to be the Sheriff in Neptune. He was run out of office in an "emergency recall" when he made the 09er families mad by suspecting town hero Jake Kane of murdering his daughter. Keith's wife sided with the rest of the town and left him shortly after, forcing him to raise Veronica alone. Keith still is unable to leave the murder case that cost him so much alone, even though the supposed killer confessed and is on death row. Veronica has a good relationship with her dad and they're very close. Of course, she still thinks he's a total dork. Because he is.
Meet Lilly Kane, Veronica's best friend. Lilly used to be full of life and fun. She was the sort of girl who everyone loved no matter how much she screwed up (and Lilly was the expert at screwing up). Lilly shone brightly and loved to be the centre of attention. In fact, to say the world revolved around Lilly might not be an exaggeration, so far as Neptune is concerned. When she was murdered over a year ago, the chaos and devastation that occurred wasn't unlike what might happen if the sun burnt out.
Meet Duncan Kane, Veronica's ex-boyfriend. Duncan and Lilly were the reasons Veronica was accepted by the 09ers. They ruled Neptune High, so if they liked Veronica that was all that mattered. Duncan was pretty much perfect. He had a great sense of humour, he was humble, helpful, and such a good boyfriend it had to be too good to be true. He dumped Veronica a week before Lilly was killed. Duncan still rules Neptune High, but since the death of his sister, he's been more of a figure head than anything else. He's practically a robot now, so numb that you only see the occasional glimmer of who he used to be.
Meet Logan Echolls, Duncan's best friend. Logan's parents are famous actors. His father is one of the biggest action movie superstars in the industry. The sense of entitlement this has given Logan isn't something you should be exposed to if you have a weak stomach. Logan was one of Veronica's closest friends before his girlfriend, Lilly, died. Now he's the leader of the Ostracize Veronica Campaign at school. Logan's always been an ass, but Lilly's death has brought out the worst in him. He's not a likely friend for Duncan to have, but Duncan is one of the few people to know how much Logan's life sucks when the paparazzi aren't watching.
Meet Wallace Fennel, Veronica's other best friend. Originally, Wallace was just a new kid who had the misfortune of making enemies with all the wrong people. When Veronica took it upon herself to help him out, Wallace latched onto her and didn't let go until she'd let him into her world. Wallace is pretty much the only kid at school who knows that underneath Veronica's tough exterior beats the heart of a "marshmallow" who just wants everyone to be happy again. Wallace is Veronica's right-hand man and is always willing to abuse his office aid privileges to get Veronica student files.
Meet Eli "Weevil" Navarro, Veronica's... meh, let's call him her business associate. Weevil is the leader of Neptune High's resident motorcycle gang. He's mean, he's inappropriate, and he knows how to hold a grudge. Get on his good side, though, and he may very well be one of the most useful underworld connections a P.I. could hope for. Such is the case with Veronica. After helping out a few of his boys, Weevil and Veronica developed an unspoken agreement and help each other out whenever they can. They enjoy their twisted version of a friendship almost as much as you'll enjoy the rapid-fire double entendre that ensues when ever they speak to each other.
Veronica Mars is a mystery show unlike Lost and Twin Peaks in that it made good on its promise to answer all the questions raised in the pilot by the end of the first season. And mysteries abound, let me tell you. Some of them are connected and some aren't, but they all have unexpected twists and turns that keep you guessing and, of course, thoroughly entertained. The mysteries, in no particular order:
-Who killed Lilly Kane?
-Why did Lianne Mars abandon her family?
-Why did Duncan dump Veronica so abruptly and with no explanation?
-Why does Logan hate Veronica so much?
-Who slipped Veronica Rohypnol and raped her at Shelley Pomroy's party?
And those are just the mysteries from the pilot. Wait till you see the new ones that turn up as the series progresses.
