robin is a girl, she didn't have an interview today, but they gave her a job last week. she is very nice.

pedal, i would say that you wouldn't necessarily want the most options, because usually that comes in the form of an effects processor. the funny thing about guitar things and guitarists is that usually, as technology moves ahead, what guitarists wants goes backwards. hence the whole crave for vintage equipment. most pedals are built around the same circuits that they have been for 20, 30, 40 years, but (relatively - as in, the past many years) recent shifts to digital modelling of these circuits just sounds fake and cheap and wrong. so what i am saying is don't get him an effects processor, because anything that is not insanely expensive will probably not be worth it.

as for loops and funky distortions, some of the relevant things i have been looking at lately are the shin ei companion fuzz, the interfax harmonic percolator, and the maestro fsh-1. the problem there is that both of these are pretty absurdly rare, old, and as a result, buying an original is insanely expensive. however, building one is nowhere near as expensive or rare, though i am not sure how accurate to the original it would be, since i've never played both side by side. anyway, if john is into that sort of thing, you could easily buy a kit, at least for the shin ei companion, for a little under 50 bucks, shipped. i know i like putting things together myself, it is half the fun, i don't know if john feels that same way though. if any of this sounds like a good idea or is helpful or whatever, let me know and i can try to offer more help or advice or what have you.

alright! now i have some direction!
i think the kit sounds cool. he does like putting things together, so i think this would be a good constructive project for him. and a fabulous present.
where would a girl go on the internet to find one of these kits?

here

I'd looked at it before, and now that I've looked at it again, it is really a pretty simple project, so if he doesn't have a whole lot of experience soldering stuff, it still wouldn't be too hard. I thought that this might be a good idea, because if he likes strange distortions and such, this one has been described a the sound of a swarm of wasps hitting a windshield, in a good way.
