Logan answered his cell phone, hearing Veronica sobbing over the line, he panicked.
“Veronica! What’s wrong? Is Claire OK? Are you OK?” Logan grabbed his car keys and ran out the door. He was determined to break every speed limit to get to her.
“You’re a match!” Veronica screamed through tears of joy.
“Oh my, God!” Logan staggered and grabbed the doorframe.
“The doctor called. You matched perfectly. He wants to do the transplant in two days. Is that OK?”
“YES!” He shouted with laughter. “Does Claire know yet?”
“Not yet, she’s still at school. Duncan’s going to pick her up in a few minutes. Could you come over? We wanted you to be here when we give her the good news.” Veronica was still sniffing as she spoke.
“I’m on my way,” Logan laughed.

Veronica and Logan were sitting on the sofa waiting as Duncan walked in with Claire.
“How was your day at school?” Veronica was smiling so big that her jaws were aching.
“Fine,” Claire crawled in Veronica’s lap and nuzzled against her neck.
“We have some really big news,” Veronica giggled.
“We’re getting a pony?” Claire gasped and looked at Veronica with a hopeful expression.
Logan and Duncan chuckled.
“Don’t even think about it.” Veronica leveled both of them with a warning glare.
“We’ll see,” Logan sang.
“You’re as bad as Duncan,” Veronica frowned.
“And you’re off topic,” Logan reminded gleefully.
Veronica rolled her eyes and laughed as she looked at Logan. “Would you do the honors?”
Logan nodded happily and took Claire’s small hands in his as he looked into her sweet face. “Guess what I’m giving you?”
“A pony?”
Logan laughed, “Maybe, but this is much better than a pony. I’m giving you a new kidney.” He watched the excitement register on her face. She jumped from Veronica’s lap into his arms and began kissing his cheek and hugging his neck. She was giggling and so was Logan. Duncan and Veronica were in tears as they watched the scene unfold.
Suddenly, Claire stopped giggling and pulled back, looking at Logan with a serious expression on her face. “You know that it will hurt….right?”
Logan swallowed audibly. He felt a knot form in his throat at the level of concern she was showing for him. “Yes, it may hurt, but I will be OK. Please, don’t worry about me. I want you to be well again.”
“OK, if you’re sure,” she smiled hesitantly.
“I am,” he kissed her small hands as his eyes glistened with tears.

With a lot of arguing and string pulling, the hospital allowed Logan to room with Claire in the hospital.
They were both prepped and ready for surgery. Veronica was holding Claire, trying desperately to comfort her. Claire was terrified to go into surgery. Nothing Veronica or Duncan said would calm her.
The transport team came into the room to get them and Claire began wailing. Tears were steaming down her cheeks as she held tightly to Veronica’s neck and wouldn’t let go.
“Claire,” Logan said softly. “Would you like to ride with me?” He held out his arms to her.
“I don’t think that’s a very good idea,” the nurse said coldly.
Logan sat up quickly and glared at her. “My child is afraid and she WILL ride down with me! If you have a problem with that, go get the doctor!”
She huffed and walked out the door quickly. The two nursing aids looked at Logan and smiled. The girl spoke up,”She’s always rude. It’s not a problem for your daughter to ride with you.”
“Claire, will you ride with me? I’m afraid to go alone,” he held out his arms again. Claire sniffled and nodded.
Veronica sat her in Logan’s bed and kissed them both as tears fell from her eyes. “I love you both,” she choked through her tears.
“We will be just fine.” He nudged Claire, “Won’t we sweetie?”
She continued to whimper but gave Veronica the best brave smile she could muster and nodded.
“Time to go,” the male nursing aide said. They wheeled the bed into the hall.
Duncan leaned down and kissed Claire. “I love you,” he said softly. He looked at Logan and smiled, “Thank you Logan.”
“What, no kiss for me?” Logan said with mock offense.
Duncan leaned down with a smirk on his face but Logan swatted him away. “Stop it. You’re not my type,” Logan laughed.
The nursing aids wheeled Logan and Claire down the hall. Claire was lying on Logan’s chest, still crying.
“Please don’t cry Claire. I won’t let anything ever happen to you. I love you so much,” he said softly as he kissed the crown of her head.
Logan held her and comforted her until she was given the medicine and put into a deep sleep.

The surgery went well and both recovered swiftly over the next few weeks.
Logan spent every possible moment with Claire. Slowly, a deep connection started to develop between them. They became close as a result of the transplant. He realized that Claire’s bond with him would grow, given enough time. She would truly love him one day, but Duncan would always be her ‘daddy.’ It was hard for Logan at first but he knew that the needs and happiness of his child had to come first and he accepted that Claire had to make a decision.
While at the park one day, Logan decided to ask Claire if she still wanted to have Duncan’s last name. She didn’t want to hurt him, but was honest with him about her feelings.
Logan made the necessary arrangements for Claire’s wish to be granted. Although, he would never be her ‘daddy’, he would always be a vital part of her life.

“You’re a good man, Logan Echolls,” Duncan said as he signed the adoption papers.
“You don’t know how hard this is for me, Duncan.” Logan’s hand shook as he took the pen and signed.
Duncan looked at him and smiled sadly. “I can imagine. You’re doing something wonderful though and I want you to know how much I appreciate it.”

A few weeks later, the grand wedding took place. Logan watched Claire walk down the isle in her frilly white dress with a basket of flower petals. She smiled at him as she made a show of dropping the petals along her path.
When the doors came open for Veronica to enter, Logan lost his breath. She was gorgeous. She had her hair piled loosely on top of her head, revealing her beautiful face. She smiled as she walked down the isle on Wallace’s arm. Duncan was beaming with pride as she made her way to him.
Logan wiped a tear as she took Duncan’s arm and stepped in front of the minister. Claire glanced over to Logan and winked. He knew. This was right.
Watching Duncan and Veronica marry was both painful and inspiring for Logan. He saw commitment in them. It was something he had never experienced in his lifetime.
Logan knew that Duncan loved Veronica and that she loved him as well. Most importantly, he knew that they loved Claire. That he was included in that love. The three of them would always be there for her, love her, put her feelings first, no matter what.
Wallace approached Logan at the reception and smiled. “You proved me wrong, didn’t you?”
“How did I prove you wrong Wallace?” Logan asked as he watched Veronica dancing with Claire.
“You’re a good man. You put their needs above what you wanted.” Wallace nodded toward Veronica and Claire.
Logan nodded, “When you love someone, you make sacrifices.”
“So, are you staying in Neptune?”
“Yes. I’ve already moved into my new house. I’m going to be involved in Claire’s life. I may have missed the first part, but I refuse to miss anymore. She may legally be Duncan’s, but in my heart…she’s always going to be mine.”
