Logan and Claire sat on the front porch petting Charlie, the cat, while Veronica walked Duncan to his car.
Logan tried to be inconspicuous about watching them but failed miserably. Watching them being lovey dovey was tearing him up inside.
“Mommy misses grandpa.” Claire spoke up suddenly, snapping Logan out of his hard stare.
“I know she does,” Logan said softly.
“I hear her crying at night when she thinks I’m sleeping.” Claire put her chin on her knee and looked up at Logan. “It scares me when mommy cries. She got so sick last time.”
“Mommy will be fine Claire. I’m here now and I promise to take care of you both.”
“But you’ll go back to work again and be gone forever,” Claire looked so sad just thinking about it.
“No, Claire. I won’t be going away. I’m moving back to Neptune and I won’t leave you and mommy ever again.”
“Pinkie swear?” Claire held up her little finger.
Logan smiled at the simplicity of gaining her trust. If only it were that simple with Veronica. “Pinky swear,” he said as they locked fingers.
“I’ll tell mommy that you won’t leave. She told me that you lived far away and would be going home soon.”
“I think that mommy will understand one day,” Logan sighed.
Logan saw a sign saying that the house across the street was for sale and he came up with a plan. He would prove that he was staying and be close to Veronica and Claire. He pulled out his cell phone and called Barry quickly before Veronica could come back.
“Offer whatever they want. Double the offer if they agree to vacate in a week.” Logan said. “I have to go, call me as soon as you know.” He hurried and hung up because Veronica was coming.
“So, what are you two doing?” Veronica sat down on the step in front of Claire, who wrapped her arms around Veronica’s neck and laid her head on her mother’s shoulder.
“You tired?” Veronica asked and Claire nodded.
“Come on, I’ll give you a piggyback ride” Logan said. Claire smiled and wrapped her arms around Logan’s neck.
“Ready for a nap?” Veronica asked as they walked into the house.
“Yes,” Claire yawned.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Is she sleeping?” Veronica asked from her prone position on the couch.
“Three books later? Yes.” Logan sat down and pulled Veronica’s feet into his lap. He began rubbing them gently.
“If you keep that up, I’ll go to sleep,” Veronica said sleepily.
Logan just smiled and continued to rub her feet until he heard her breathing level off.
“I love you baby,” he whispered as he looked at her beautiful face. She didn’t have the pain and worry clouding her face when she was asleep. She looked like the old Veronica. The girl who was who was happy and carefree.
Soon he began to feel his eyes getting heavy. The lack of sleep was catching up with him. He scooted up beside her, laid his head on her stomach, and was soon fast asleep as well.
Logan woke up an hour later because he could feel her gently combing through his hair with her fingers. He moved his head and glanced up at her. She was staring at him intently.
“I’m sorry,” Logan whispered and tried to sit up but she shook her head.
“Don’t get up,” she whispered.
He scooted up so that they were face to face and brought her hand to his mouth, kissing her fingers gently.
“I love you Veronica,” he said softly.
“Don’t,” she breathed with sad eyes.
He pushed her hair back behind her ear and pressed a kiss onto her forehead. “I’m going to keep telling you until you want to hear it.”
Veronica scooted closer and laid her head on Logan’s chest. He wrapped his shaky arms around her. He was so nervous. He didn’t want to do anything to screw this up.
His cell phone began ringing and Veronica tried to sit up so that he could answer it but he held her tightly.
“They’ll leave a message,” he whispered, as he looked deep into her eyes.
“We have to stop Logan,” she said. “It’s wrong.”
“No, it’s not. You and Claire are everything to me. This is the way it’s meant to be,” he kissed her gently. He could feel her giving in but she stiffened suddenly and sat up.
“You should go Logan,” her voice was shaking with emotion.
“No. I won’t let you push me away this time,” he pulled her back into his arms but she began sobbing.
“I can’t do this again Logan. I’ll die,” her face was filled with sadness and fear. “I can’t take a chance like this, not with me, not with Claire. I’ll never walk away from Duncan.” Veronica jumped up and ran into the bathroom.
Logan’s phone rang again. Barry told him that the offer on the house was accepted and that the owners would vacate within a week. Logan smiled as he closed his phone. At least he would be across the street. He could see them anytime he wanted now.
Logan walked to the bathroom door and knocked gently. “You OK?” he asked.
Veronica opened the door. She was holding her prescription bottle and her hands were shaking uncontrollably.
“I can’t get this opened,” she gasped, trying to catch her breath.
Logan picked her up quickly, carrying her to the bed. He ran to get some water. He opened her medicine and helped her get the pill into her mouth. Logan was terrified. She looked awful. She was pouring sweat and her face was red.
“We need to go to the hospital,” he said and tried to get up but she grabbed his hand.
“I can’t do that again. It scares Claire,” she was panting.
“Well you’re scaring me,” tears welled in his eyes.
She lay down and turned on her side. “Just let me have a few minutes, if I don’t get better I’ll go. Don’t leave me.”
“I’ll never leave you, never.” Logan promised as he lay down and spooned up against her. He began rubbing her arm and humming softly in her ear. She began to relax after a few minutes and her breathing was almost normal.
“Talk to me,” she whispered.
“Talk about what baby?” He asked softly as he closed his eyes and breathed in the scent that was all Veronica. It was embedded in his memory. There had been a time that he had thought he would never experience it again. However, the past year found him yearning for her so much that he made every excuse in the world to come home.
“Talk like you used to, tell me your thoughts…anything.” Her voice was so weak and tired.
“OK,” he whispered and kissed the back of her head. He knew what she wanted. During the time they were together, he called her every night and would talk to her for hours. Even if they had been together every minute of the day, he still called. He would talk to her until she was ready to drift off to sleep. Her nightmares had been so horrible at first, it was her only way to relax, and quickly became a nightly ritual.
“It took me a year after you left,” she whispered.
“A year for what baby?” he asked.
“To really sleep.”
Logan felt so horrible hearing that. Knowing that she suffered through her entire pregnancy tired and yearning for him to come home. He didn’t deserve any of the kindness that she was offering him. Even though he hadn’t received the letters, the way he left her was inexcusable and he knew it.
“I’m so sorry Veronica. I’ll never leave you or Claire again,” Logan knew that this was his mantra now. Something he would find himself saying on a daily basis, until she believed him.
“Talk to me.”
Logan began the story. He knew it by heart, having told it to her hundreds of times. He spoke slow and soft, as he gently nudged his nose into her silky blond hair.
“The first day I saw you was a Wednesday. It was cool and crisp outside. There was a breeze blowing your long pigtails as you stood on the sidelines clapping for your teammates.” He heard her sigh as she relaxed visibly.
“I couldn’t see your face at first, you had your back to me. Then, I heard your voice. I knew it belonged to you, even over the others. It sounded like the cool breeze felt.”
“You’re sappy Logan,” she said drowsily. He could hear the smile in her voice.
“You had on your little knee socks and soccer uniform and….oh God! It was driving me insane,” he was grinning like a fool now.
“I retract my earlier comment. You’re a pervert,” she giggled.
Logan could hear the happiness in her voice now. He was relieved that she was feeling better. He felt the tears prick as he continued.
“I stood there, silently begging you to ‘turn around…just turn around.’ It was as if you heard my thoughts. You turned so slowly that it was like a slow motion scene from a movie. I saw your profile first and my breath caught in my throat.” Veronica took Logan’s hand in hers and squeezed it gently in anticipation, as if she didn’t know the ending.
“Then you were looking at me. My knees were so weak that I came close to falling.” He kissed her shoulder “Then you smiled and I fell….in love with you.”
He heard her sigh with happiness and it tugged his heart.
Logan felt her gently tracing patterns on the back of his hand now. It was something she used to do as they lay in bed after making love. He no longer felt like a stranger here, not when she was lying in his arms. This was right. This was what he wanted and he suspected she did as well. However, she would need more time to realize it.
“I love you,” he whispered again.
He heard her draw in a ragged breath and he feared that she would get upset again, but she just sighed and squeezed his hand slightly.
That simple move spoke volumes and gave Logan new hope. All wasn’t lost. He used to tell Veronica constantly that he loved her. She would joke that she was losing her voice from having to say it so often. Consequently, she started squeezing his hand and smiling at him. It was her secret code. She would do it when they were in class and the teacher was talking, it was her unspoken ‘I love you.’
‘Please God, let it mean what I think it means,’ Logan prayed silently.
