This is a story I wrote about 4 or so years ago. It's a Buffy/Spike oneshot set towards the end of season 7.

She knew he loved her, didn’t deny anymore that he could or that he did. Instead, when he told her how he felt, she’d just answer him with a quiet ‘I know’. He’d smile sadly and she’d go back to what she was doing. It was their routine. She expected the heart-breaking smile just as he knew what her response would be. But every time he whispered those three little words to her, she could see in his eyes that he hoped for something more than what she would invariably give him. He wanted her love.
Love. Throughout his entire existence, it was the thing that caused him the most pain; nevertheless, it was the very thing he craved.
I may be loves bitch, but at least I’m man enough to admit it.
But, as much as he wanted it, as much as he deserved it, love was the one thing she could never give him, right?
She didn’t know anymore. It used to be she did, knew she could never be with him, but all that changed when someone told her it was alright.
Do you love him? It’s okay if you do, he has done a lot of good and he does love you.
But now she was scared, scared to let him into her heart for fear of him one day not being there when she woke up. Not because he stopped loving her or because he walked away like they always do, she knew he wasn’t like them, but because he would be gone, in the fit in an ashtray sense of the word.
If that ever happened, she knew that it would be her fault. One night, she’d slip up or her opponent would just be too much for her, and he’d do something stupid like get himself killed just so that she would live to see tomorrow. That’s what he did, risked everything for her.
It’d be like suicide.
I’d do. Right person, person I loved. I’d do it.
And that was what she hated most about this; she didn’t deserve any of that, didn’t deserve to have him being willing to die for her, not after everything she put him through.
You know you want to dance.
Say it’s true. Say I do want to. It wouldn’t be you, Spike. It would never be you. You’re beneath me.
But she had him, even if she didn’t deserve him. And he wasn’t going anywhere.
Please leave.
Ah, no.
She knew that she couldn’t take that for granted, not with everything he’s done for her.
This chip…they did to me. I couldn’t help it. But the soul I got on my own…for you.
She knew she had to make a decision then, one of the biggest decisions of her life. Should she open her heart, should she risk getting hurt again?
Yeah, because you don’t lie, cheat, steal, or manipulate.
I don’t hurt you.
I know.
She walked to the basement door and stood there with her hand on the knob for what seemed like forever but couldn’t have been more that a couple of minutes. With a deep breath, she turned the knob, opened the door and descended the stairs.
When she reached the bottom, she glanced over to where he was sitting and in that instant she knew what she had to do.
The end was coming, maybe for real this time, and she knew there was a very good chance that they wouldn’t make it. She couldn’t die, couldn’t let him die, without giving them a chance, with out letting him know what it felt like to be loved.
She looked at him and the second their eyes met, he was across the room and holding her in his arms, and she never felt safer. It was like being invincible. The apocalypse could start right then and it wouldn’t matter because nothing could get to her when he was there.
She pulled back a little so that she could see his face.
“Spike?”
She could see his love for her shining in his crystal blue eyes.
“Yeah.”
She leaned forward and softly kissed his lips.
“I love you.”
And instead of saying it back or even the shock and denial that she expected, he just closed his eyes, pressed a kiss to her forehead and quietly whispered two little words in her ear.
“I know.”
And she smiled a genuine smile.
