50 Book Challenge Books #8-9

Magic's Price was excellent. Unsurprisingly. Of course, calling this series "The Last Herald-Mage Trilogy" kind of gave away what was going to be the major problem in this one. Then again, you're supposed to already know that the Herald-Mages are all gone. I'm going to take wyvernfriend's advice and move on to the "Arrows" trilogy next, since those were the actual first books in the series. After I read some more non-Lackey.

And hey, book #9 is non-Lackey! It's another author I tend to read to death, of course: Anne Bishop. It took me long enough. Dreams Made Flesh came out last January, and I just got it last week. Ah well, at least I finally did. I loved it. Devoured it. But I will confess to being slightly disappointed in the last segment, "Kaeleer's Heart." Don't get me wrong. I wanted to know how Jaenelle and Daemon were going to rebuild their relationship after the events of Queen of the Darkness, but this novella felt so busy tying up loose ends. It had the feel of fanfic, actually. And as fanfic, it would be utterly amazing. But it was the real author, and it felt like it lacked the depth of the novels. Which, yes, a novella will necessarily either cover less time (which this did) or treat things less deeply (which this also did). And I think maybe that's the problem. This did both. And the whole Lektra trying to steal Daemon thing rang very hollow. It was just something to show he's still the Sadist, and to have, you know, a plot beyond Jaenelle trying to adjust to life wearing Twilight's Dawn instead of the Ebony or the Black. And why didn't Roxie get annihilated by Jaenelle's spell? That just didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Right now I'm working on Dune: The Battle of Corrin. And I do mean working. This one I'm reading because, well, I've read all the rest of the Dune books. Not because I particularly give a damn. I have a feeling it's going to get set aside for something else pretty quickly.
