So far, everyone I know personally over there is well clear of this, thank all the Gods. But this is scary. At first they were saying it might be some sort of power surge, but there is now some evidence of explosives.
What sort of shocks me is that I thought the UK was light-years ahead of the US in anti-terrorism, thanks to years of having to deal with the IRA and Sinn Fein. While not, obviously, as personally impacting as something in literally the next state over, in some ways this is more shocking to me.
I had trouble getting on the UK sites a few minutes ago, so here's the CNN link for now.
Near simultaneous explosions rocked the London Underground network and at least one bus at the morning rush hour, police said, causing fatalities and prompting officials to shut down the entire underground transport network. In the first report of casualties, City of London police told CNN there had been two fatalities at Aldgate east station. At least 90 people are reported to have been injured. The explosions came a day after London was awarded the 2012 Olympics and as the G8 summit was getting under way in Scotland. Initial reports blamed a power surge, but officials were not ruling out a terrorist attack."We are concerned that this is a coordinated attack. We are aware that one of the sites does containly does contain indications of explosives," Sir Ian Blair told Sky News. And here are links to the
BBC and
Guardian stories.
