The Bridge
River rubbed her aching, burning eyes and tried to hold up her end of the conversation. She hadn't slept well, if at all, in the past 28 days, 14 hours, 7 minutes and 3.5 seconds.
"Have you tried talking to her yourself?" She slowly sipped her vitamin water, hoping to ease her headache and calm her stomach.
"All the time. She won't listen. She hears me, but she ignores me. Some things never change, I guess," he sighed.
"What makes you think she'll listen to me? We're not exactly friends."
"That’s exactly why she’ll listen to you, mei-mei."
River smiled at his convoluted logic. "All right. Next sleep cycle. Isn’t your time almost up?"
"That it is. Xie-xie, River."
"I can’t promise anything, ge-ge," she said softly.
He tucked an errant lock of hair behind her ears with cool fingers and rested his cold hand gently on her head. River closed her eyes at the touch and wished it was Jayne’s hand touching her, well, any damn where.
"I don’t know why Mal calls you Albatross. I would’ve called you Raptor Red."
"Zoe misses you so much Wash, we all do..."
He was gone. There was no sign that he had ever been there, except the ice crystals forming in her hair.
