Title: Spring Cleaning (I didn't bother to individually title each drabble)
Prompt: Spring
Characters: Mal, Book, Wash, Simon, Jayne
Word Count: 100 each drabble, 4 drabbles, totaling 400 (isn't math fun?)
Disclaimer: These characters aren't mine. Please don't spring the lawyers on me.
Warning: Mal/Jayne slash
Ridiculously Long Author's Note: So, in commenting on my previous post for this community on this prompt, I had mentioned that the scenario would have played out differently if Jayne had been in Kaylee's place. The wheels started turning, so I decided to take the situation - spring cleaning, Inara's shuttle - and have Mal interact with each member of the crew. What follows is the first part of the result of this experiment. They'll all be on the same page, but each character link will take you to each individual story. And yes, the ladies will be featured in the next set - I just didn't want to go over the 400 word limit. (which I obviously have done by including this explanation!)
Book entered the shuttle just as Mal was setting the last items in a box.
“Something I can help you with, Shepherd?”
“Would Inara have left a sage wand?”
“That a sex toy?”
Book shook his head. “Certain cultures used sage to purge negative energy from their surroundings. It was their version of spring cleaning.”
Mal found the sage and drew it out of the box. He’d seen Inara burning this before. Many times. She was gone, but Mal remained, what did that say for its power?
“Knock yourself out.” He handed Book the useless bundle of sticks and left.

Mal was setting the last of the items in a box when Wash came in. “Everything all right with my girl?”
“Zoe’s fine.”
Mal shot him a look.
“We’re on course.” Wash moved in closer. “What are you doing?”
“Just a little spring cleaning.”
“There’s been ice on the last three planets we touched down on. You have a very strange notion of Spring, Mal.”
“It’s time, that’s all.”
Wash looked through the box. His eyes seized on a pair of red silk scarves. “Can I?”
Mal handed them to Wash. “Just don’t tell me what you do with ‘em.”
....................
Simon walked into the shuttle, just as Mal was closing the lid on a box. “Oh, I didn’t think anyone...”
“Just finishing up some spring cleaning, Doc.”
Simon looked around the empty shuttle, then sat down on the bed “Is that everything?”
“Yep. Just have to post it the next time we get planetside.”
Simon sighed. “Seems a shame she couldn’t stay.”
“Well, we’ve all got our own lives to lead.” Something chased around the edges of his mind that he had to ask. “You do this often?”
“Enough. It’s been the closest I’ve felt to home since leaving Osiris.”
....................
Jayne walked into the empty shuttle just as Mal gathered the last few items and set them in a box. “What’re ya doin’?”
“Just a little spring cleaning, that’s all.”
“She ain’t comin’ back, is she?”
“Doubtful.”
“Good.”
Jayne took the box from his hands and set it on the floor.
Mal got out a “What the-“ before Jayne’s mouth descended on his. The kiss was quick, hard, insistent, and more than a little bit puzzling.
“Thought you didn’t kiss on the mouth.”
“Jus’ girls.” Jayne kissed him again, slower this time. “Mal?”
“Mm-hmm?”
“There massage oil in that box?”
