Time for the shredder?

This week I finally managed to complete Super Paper Mario. So that means it's time for me to moan about it or praise it like a god.

Super Paper Mario (Wii)
I really looked forward to this game. Not just because it stars my favourite person in the world, but because I loved the previous two Paper Mario games. Well actually I wouldn't say I loved the 2nd one, just liked it a lot. If you have played both the previous games, then you should pretty much know what to expect with this game. It has exactly the same structure. Start off in a big town, go and collect one of seven shiny things, then go back to town and do it all over again. Surely the developers could have thought of something a bit more original. One thing that luckily hasn't changed is the excellent dialogue. There are butt tonnes to get through, but for me it was never a chore. It brings the characters to life and adds a dose of comedy to the mix. I found myself playing as Bowser more than I should have because I wanted to see his witty comments. That guy just cracks me up. The Pixl's that help you in the game are a bit of a waste. Sometimes you will only use one once throughout the entire game. But let's face it, the side characters were never going to be as good as Goombella.

My eyes were treated fairly well. Crisp colourful lands one minute, then dull and dark caves the next. The music wasn't quite as good though. Some tunes I loved, but most of them as forgettable as cheese. The controls work well, and the character movement was spot on. Hitting an enemy in 3D can be a bit annoying, but apart from that I can't moan in that department. But there is plenty for me to moan about...

At time this game reminds me of a see-saw (thanks for spelling David). It's up one minute, then comes crashing down the next. One level can be great to play through, with secrets hidden in every corner. But the next can be as dull as dish water. Just imagine how much fun it would be to run around in one of those hamster wheel things for 10 minutes. Well with this game you get the chance to do just that. Mario is stuck in inside some wheel contraption and you have to run around in it for nearly 10 minutes. No dodging a crazy enemy, no collecting coins, just running. Holding right on the controller for that length of time is not my idea of fun. I just couldn't believe the developers put that in there. What where they thinking? As punishment they should all be put in a bloody hamster wheel and be forced to play through that part of the game again and again. Seriously, it's fucking retarded! There are other moments of pure boredom in this game, but luckily the good outweighs the bad.

I have wrote way more than I intended so I will wrap it up now. It's a very good game, but not quite as good as I would have expected. I hope there will be another Paper Mario game in the future, but for the mean time, I think Paper Mario needs to be put in the recycle bin.

Best bit:
More Bowser action than ever before!

Worst bit:
Mimi froze my game! Well done Nintendo for adding a bug in the european version.

Score: 8/10
