Katrina Trip - Into NO and then "On the road again..."

Nov 11, 2005 23:53

We split up the work that had to be accomplished today. Eric, John and Tariq went back to the dugout to make a list of all the work that still had to be done. I made a power point presentation and then Dr. Jahan and I went to the high school to talk to one of the advanced chemistry classes. Our presentation was due to start at 0830, and at 0835, the superintendent still hadn’t shown up. So we ended up being a little late, and there was no projector that we could use, so we ended up giving the presentation without any kind of visual aid.

We were speaking on college, and engineering, projects that I’ve worked on, the kind of classes to take while in high school, etc. We also answered questions. Most of the kids seemed to enjoy it, but got a little nervous when I started talking about the amount of homework that most college kids get.

As soon as we got done giving the presentation we got on the road and headed into New Orleans to drop Dr. Jahan at the airport so that she could fly home. We took I-11 into the city and then I-10 back out. We went the two different routes to get different pictures and views of the damage that the storm did. Nothing can prepare a person for the kind of damage that happened down there. Whole buildings are done, and yet, buildings right next to them are still fine. It’s hard to explain. You can see where the buildings to flooded, they have a dark brown line that runs along the length of the building, and shows how deep the flood water was.

After dropping Dr. Jahan at the airport, it was all about getting home. We hopped on I-10 and started heading north east. We ended up getting caught in traffic a few times, the worst time around Birmingham Alabama because of a car accident. Got a few pictures of the responding apparatus. And we passed a few interesting vehicles on the road as we were heading towards home. I saw a couple of American Red Cross Disaster Relief Trucks, and an EPA Command Trailer from the New England region.

We were shooting to get to Knoxville TN before we stopped for the night, but we only made it as far Chattanooga TN before we quit. We crashed at a Super 8 Motel, and were on the road by 8 AM on Saturday AM.
