Yesterday I attended a 'good bye' BBQ at Delores Park for my friend Francis.
Francis is moving to NY. I know he's been wanting to for a long time and so I am glad for him.
I am sad to see a friend I have known for so long move. I am also sad to see 1/3 of the best band (FMTM) relocate.
It was nice to see him, play badmitton, and talk with Matthew.
Last night, I attended a 'report back' of Pin@ys that went on an exposure trip to the Philippines over the summer. I went with Mel and Matthew.
We met up with sergio, Josh, and Joanna who are all part of the Filipino Community Center.
The FCC is in the Excelsior District. I was sooooooo damn impressed with their 2 yr old space they created and all that goes on in it!!! -They've got this HUGE former church and it houses events, guitar lessons, dance groups, meetings, and a place for youth to hang out.-
It was really cool to see my man sergio as part of an older generation (since I view myself as some immature guy hanging out with other young HC kids).
The 'report back' was great. I wish I could do a write-up of it that would cover everything and do it justice but I can't.
The exposure group (Babae & League Of Filipino Students) integrated with sectors of Filipino society such as peasants, workers, and students.
We got to hear about and see some of the hardships and struggles they face... including fuckin military/government death squads! We also got a taste of how organized and strong the movement(s) is there and how it connects to us here (especially Filipino and communities of color).
Mel and I eventually hit up Felini's for some dinner of pizza and Caesar salad. It was bomb!
A long day but one filled with meaningful fun stuff and good friends/comrades.
note: This may sound odd, but it was really nice smelling Korean food (BBQ) and Filipino food (FCC) again. haha
