I was just reading old livejournal posts from last spring, when I was trying to decide whether to come to Beloit or not. I was undecided in large part because I had a negative impression of this part of the midwest, it felt "too brown". And then, too, Ian confirmed that worry by telling me that the midwest really does suck for much of the year.
What's funny is how wrong I was. Yes, it feels very brown and devoid of color, coming from the lush pacific northwest - but there are very few evergreens here, so it's a very sharp contrast. But fall is lovely here, many people claim it as Beloit's prettiest time. However, winter is beautiful too - all silver and white and cold. I never really got over the snow, how incredibly powdery and sparkly it was. And now is gorgeous too - it has more or less been spring for a month or so, but in the past two weeks it feels like everything has happened at once, leaves coming out, grass greening, flowers blooming, birds coming back. So, basically, I was very wrong. This area has its share of beauty, it is just of a different sort than I grew up with.
