It took me a long time to appreciate the beauty of the desert. But now there's few things as starkly beautiful to my eyes, as dramatic to my imagination as the sorts of images as the one you posted. Much as I love my mountain lake home, with its heavy forests and deep homes, I also love the desert.
Like in the movie Lawrence of Arabia, when he's asked why he loves the desert: It's clean.
Here's a typical Nevada landscape:
The Black Rock Desert has some of the most striking land features in the state, but valleys like this are common in the Great Basin..

It really looks like the Himalays though, even if it doesn't have as high peaks. And it really looks amazingly lovely!
I've heard about the Burning Man festival in Black Rock Desert, and it sounds quite strenous to bring all your water to stay there. But it could definitely be worth being at the outskirts of the desert for a few days.
Is the picture from Black Rock Desert?
I can understand that it took a long time to appreciate the desert when you grew up with lakes and forests. The arid landscape really is stark and hides nothing.
Now I have to add the Nevadan desert to the list of places to see. :)
