I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've come across the words "sprouted into a mock penis" in my research. I actually had to read the sentence twice to make sure I wasn't having some kind of hallucination.
"This flap was a modest affair in the medieval era but sprouted into a mock penis as the 16th century began. This became a beribboned and otherwise decorated display by the middle of the era." Malcolm-Davies, J & Mikhaila, N (2006) The Tudor Tailor.
There's even a scaled pattern, you know...just in case I ever need to reproduce a 16th century codpiece. Although, now that I think about it, it gets to the point better and far more subtly than AXE body spray. Maybe it's ripe for a comeback?
