I really need to start writing posts that are not rants or whinging. Oh well.
We had quite a lot of snow today (more than I have had in probably a decade), and all lectures and tutorials were cancelled. If I'd been writing this post a few hours ago, it would have been full of glee and excitedness. I didn't write this a few hours ago, because I was too busy playing in the snow :-)
So anyway, I made a snowman. It took about two and a half, maybe three hours, but I enjoyed it and was really proud of the result. I got some photos on my phone (which doesn't have a particularly great camera), and then on a disposable camera (which will hopefully come out a lot better).
It turns out that a University campus is not the best place to make a snowman. When I was a few metres away from him, trying to find something to use as eyes, a couple of boys (who would probably rather be called men, but their behaviour shows otherwise) decided it would be fun to throw something at his head, which took a chunk out of it. I'm rather pleased that the head didn't fall off though - apparently I'd made it to be more stable than I'd thought. When I went back over, I discovered that there was a pretty large ball of snow, a carrot, and two blue poker chips at the bottom of my snowman, which I assume used to be the head, nose, and eyes (respectively) of someone else's snowman.
I fixed my snowman's head, found some eyes, finished him off, and took some photos on my phone (in case someone tried to demolish him before I came back). Then I went to buy a hat and scarf (blue) from the shop on campus, put them on him, and took some more photos, also on my phone. After that I felt satisfied and went to try and find the group who'd gone sledging earlier, but I couldn't find them.
It then occurred to me that the shop probably sold disposable cameras, and lo and behold, they did, so I bought one. When I got back to my snowman, I saw that someone had nicked his scarf and damaged his head so that a chunk of snow was missing from the bottom, and his nose and mouth had fallen off. I fixed him back up again, and went off to buy a new hat-and-scarf set, which had to be red because they didn't have any more blue ones. They didn't look quite as good as the blue, but I took some photos on the disposable camera anyway, because it was the best I could do. Which was fine. I was still fairly happy with him.
Once that was done, I took some photos of other things around campus - pretty views, other people's snowmen (or at least the ones that still had heads, which wasn't very many), and the igloo (!!!) that a group of people were in the middle of making. Incidentally, I never went back to see if they'd finished it. I'll have to have a look in the morning. It was pretty awesome. Then I went inside and warmed up, since I'd been out in the snow with drenched feet for about 5 hours by that point.
I just went to use the washing machines, and on the way back I checked on my snowman. The only part of him that was recognisable as a snowman was his head, upside down on the ground. The hat and scarf were gone.
I find that I have days when I'm pretty neutral about people, days when I think they're wonderful, and days when I think they suck. This is one of the latter. I really hope it snows again tonight (or sometime soon), so I can make another snowman in a slightly more secluded area so that it's harder to find.
ETA, one hour later: It's snowing again! Oh, Weatherman, you're really treating us this week! Thank you! :-D
Also, I have corrected the title. I should really know, having spent 5 years doing German, that it's "mein" not "meinen" for a masculine noun that is the subject of a sentence, and whilst "kaputt" sounds infinitely better (leading to me saying, "Mein Hamster ist kaputt" a lot, much to the irritation of my teacher, who knew that I knew what I was saying was wrong) and is (I'm sure) more technically accurate, it doesn't quite capture how I feel as well as "gestorben".
real life,
people really suck sometimes,
rants
