This is such a roller coaster ride. D: I was okay before after my dad told me my family was okay, as far as we knew. I went off, took the test, maaaaybe did okay, and then walked back and promptly called my mom. The situation apparently got a lot worse ( Read more... )

That's great! I'm glad I could help, at least a little.

The way a building was constructed and the type of ground can make a lot more difference than distance. Eg. landfill areas vibrate more, so the quaking is stronger and longer in that area... Five deaths are still terrible: dead people are dead people, forget numbers, but it sounds like they've got good solid homes and someone picked a good place to put a village, so hopefully there shouldn't be much aftershock damage. *knocks on wood*

I'm personally a little blase about earthquakes (which is a bad thing, as the local apatthy towards the threat of Katrina in New Orleans demonstrated), but it's hard to find something scary when your earliest memory of one was one so weak by the time it got to where I was that I only felt it because I was on the top bunk and it shook a bit. I thought that was totally cool. Some people on the street above ours who had recently moved to the state and put breakable things near the edges of shelves had some framed pictures and stuff fall & break... That might have been a different quake, though. Yeah, I think everyone felt that one...

Anyway, the point to that reminiscing was that they really should be fine. If a big one went off, then the strain on the earth's crust in that area will take a long time to build up again. Once the earth settles (aftershocks), there shouldn't be any quakes worth mentioning for ages. They dodged the bullet, it looks like they're not going to be in trouble because of the aftermath/ricochets, so it's over provided they don't do anything common senseless.

So yeah, they're fine and they're going to be fine. I'm sure you know that, it's just something that's good to hear a confirmation of after a scare like that. *hugs you*
