A week in Montreal and I don't know what to do with myself. Literally.
My uncle's wedding last weekend was fun. Only bad thing was that my godmother and her sister sat in judgement of everyone once again. I love them, but they're two conservative old maids who think they know more about relationships, marriage, and child-rearing than everyone. They sat at the reception making comments about my uncle and his new wife- she smushed the last bit of cake in his moustache, so he put a piece of ice on her back. Both were smiling and laughing- that's the way they are and how their relationship works! But my godmother sat there, saying that's a terrible way to start a marriage, blah blah blah. Drives me up a wall...
I spent my first few days in Montreal running around, waiting in ridiculously long lines to get my ID, OPUS card, loan checks, and all that...but once I finished that, I really haven't had much to do. I don't have any assignments yet, I've only had the introductory "welcome, here's the syllabus, let's start the basics" classes. It's been literally 15 months since I've had nothing to do - I spent all my time working, sleeping, interning, or catching up on things like laundry and editing sessions.
I know I'm going to be eating my words in about a week, but I just need something to DO. I ended up spending most of the day yesterday in Studio B, trying to figure out why I couldn't get a clean playback of some of my recordings on the studio equipment, just to keep myself busy. I can't stand being idle, I just can't stand it.
There are 13 of us in the Q-year, far more than there were when I was an undergrad. Only 4, maybe 5 of us will make it into the Masters. My main concern is that there are 13 of us sharing one studio with one concert hall/recording space. It seems impossible that we'll all get to record once a week...and I find that scarier than the fact that most of us won't move to the MMus. Just like Wieslaw said in May, it's going to be a tough year, but a good one...so I'm diving in head-first.
