Kitsune (mine and
koshkaphoenix's Wonder-Pooch - pictured above hacking the planet), is currently in the ER at the local 24-hour vet. On a scouting expedition at the river today, he apparently stepped on something very sharp, severing multiple arteries in his right-front paw. The bleeding was pretty severe. Think Grindhouse with all the goriest parts put back in - and the back of my mother's car (she was walking him along with her own dog) looked... really scary. She notified me from the road that he'd gotten hurt, and I was ready when she showed up - all I could do was wrap the leg with some hand-towels and medical tape, and we were off to the vet.
I drove him (in mom's car, with the Grindhouse back seat) to the vet, carried him from the car to the front office, and a vet tech scooped him out of my arms to take him back to the prep room. The vet tech was in her early 20's, maybe 5'3" and 110 lbs, and handled my 70-lb dog like she was carrying a baby. After a while, the lead vet came to speak with us, and explained what was next: Surgery to clean-out the wound and close it up, with lots of bandaging.
He should be out of surgery and bandaged-up some time in the morning. The vet said it'll likely be two to three weeks worth of bandages, elizabethan collars, antibiotics, and no going out to run and play. I think the last part of it will be the hardest for him...
Kit's a tough dog, and a sweetheart who's worth more than his own weight in gold. He's the godfather to my rabbit. He's the protector of the house when nobody else is around. He even crawls up into my lap to "protect" me when we get a thunderstorm.
I miss my pooch, but he should be home in a matter of hours. I'm thankful for that.
[UPDATE: 1:30 PM Saturday - Kit is now home, a bit doped-up and weary from the surgery and mediation, but he's home. Thanks to everyone for the warm wishes, and I'll have a more detailed write-up later.]
