Random notices on icons.
#1: Colors look better if the icon was made black and white before.
#2: Experimenting with the opacity of brushes yields some good results.
#3: If you have the nerve, erase the background of the base, then get a texture and make IT a background (very painful, but makes the final product look very nice).
#4: If you want to change FINISHED icon's colors, make it black and white, and then use a gradient with the colors you want. Set the opacity to Color or Color (Legacy) on the percent you want to.
#5: Sepia-toned icons look well with white text/text brush.
EDIT: I'll make the sample images for #1 and #4 when I have time.
