2.

Trying be damned as he stared at the small box on Yunho’s hand.

It was Jaejoong’s last week in Korea, before he had to go back; back to his prestigious university that gives him too good grades for too little effort, to his too big dormitory room, to Changmin, to a life without Yoochun around. He would stretch the distance between him and his best friend once again.

It was their last double lunch date together, and there he was hoping he could find some time alone with Yoochun.

“Marry me?” the voice rang clear through Jaejoong’s ear, running straight to his heart, piercing. The determination on Yunho’s eyes was more than a confirmation.

A confirmation that he’d lost Yoochun forever.

“I thought I should get Jaejoong’s permission too,” Yunho turned sheepishly to Jaejoong, who sat frozen on the dining table next to Changmin. “You’re Yoochun’s most important person after all.”

“Fuck, Yunho,” Yoochun almost dropped the plate on his hands. Yunho grinned at his lover and caught Yoochun as he threw himself on the taller. “Fuck, fuck, fuck!”

“Is that a yes?” Yunho chuckled.

“Yes!” Yoochun screamed without thinking twice, wiping the tears on his eyes. “Yes, you idiot, yes!” he sobbed and Yunho couldn’t help not to laugh.

Yoochun buried his face on Yunho’s shoulder, inhaling his lover’s scent, and he found safety there. Yunho’s arms around him felt like a promise, a promise for happiness, for a future. His chest was about to burst from joy, suffocating, until he opened his eyes and looked over Yunho’s shoulder.

His eyes met Jaejoong’s.

Jaejoong stared at him, his hand that held the chopstick stopped halfway in the air. There was so much sadness in his eyes, sadness Yoochun could not understand. Why isn’t Jaejoong happy for him?

He smiled, but Yoochun knew him too well to know it didn’t reach his eyes.

“Congratulations,” Jaejoong said, but his voice broke. He immediately got up and turned around, running out of the dining room.

Yoochun let go of Yunho and ran after Jaejoong, catching him right before he walked into the elevator. He grabbed Jaejoong by the elbow, “Jaejoong!” Jaejoong kept his face turned away, hiding the tears that threatened to fall. “Jae, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” Jaejoong shook his head, “No, it’s fine…just…” he choked on his sobs, “Oh god, you’re getting married, you’re leaving me forever!”

“What?” Yoochun pulled the other into his arms, “I’m not leaving you! Jaejoong, I’m getting married, not moving out of the planet!”

Jaejoong didn’t say anything and buried his face on Yoochun’s chest. He closed his eyes, trying to stop his tears, but to no avail.

“Jae-ah, it’s not like the wedding will be anytime soon. Yunho just graduated, and I still have one more year in university. We need to settle a lot of things first, get a job, find an apartment to live in, it’s a long process before we can throw a wedding!”

Jaejoong shook his head, refusing to meet Yoochun’s eyes. “God, I’m sorry. I don’t know why I’m like this. I just-”

“Jaejoong?”

Yoochun turned around and shot Changmin a confused look, half pleading for him to help stop Jaejoong’s tears. Changmin sighed and took Jaejoong into his own arms. Jaejoong’s arms automatically wound over the taller’s waist, burying his face on Changmin’s chest to hide from Yoochun.

“Sorry, I’ll take him back now,” Changmin smiled at Yoochun and led his boyfriend to the elevator. Yoochun could only nod, staring worriedly at Jaejoong. He would understand, losing Jaejoong would be terrifying for him too, but he wasn’t leaving Jaejoong.

He was just getting married.

Fuck, Yoochun cursed. Married!

He had said yes to Yunho without much thought, and that moment, he was very happy. Very, unexplainably, irrationally, happy; like he suddenly turned into God’s favorite creation, like his suffering had finally paid off. Wasn’t he in love with Jaejoong? Wasn’t Yunho just a rebound?

Did it mean he was over Jaejoong?

Getting over Jaejoong had never crossed his mind, and Yoochun shivered in disbelieve. Was it even possible to stop loving the Kim Jaejoong, his lifetime best friend, his first love…his soulmate? No, he didn’t think it was possible. He still loves Jaejoong, always will.

But the happiness he felt with Yunho for the past two years wasn’t a lie. It was real, and Yunho meant every single one of confessions. Yunho erased his doubts and reminded him that he is loved every single day, through his chaste kisses and light touches.

Yunho had always strived to make him happy. Maybe it was time for him to repay Yunho, to make the older happy instead. Maybe, it’s time to let go and let himself be happy with Yunho instead of chasing pavements.

“Is he okay?” Yunho came up from behind and wrapped his arms around Yoochun.

“I don’t know,” Yoochun sighed, “He didn’t tell me what’s wrong, and for once, I couldn’t understand him as well.”

“Changmin said he was probably jealous, they had been dating longer than we did.”

“Ah, that make sense,” Yoochun remembered how Jaejoong whined he wished Changmin is a little more romantic. He turned around and circled his arms around Yunho’s neck. “Let’s go back inside and call your parents, we need to break up the happy news to them.”

Yunho smiled down at his lover and pecked his lips, “Perfect idea.”

“Did it hurt?”

Jaejoong shook his head, but wasn’t really answering. “I’m so sorry,” he sobbed, “I’m sorry, Changmin, I’m sorry-”

“Sssh, it’s okay,” Changmin pulled him into his arms, “I know it was bound to happen. I’ve had my suspicions, but it was all confirmed when I saw the way you looked at him that day. You’re just a little slow.”

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” Jaejoong continuously mumbled against Changmin’s chest. “I know this is incredibly selfish of me but, would you stay if I asked you too?”

Changmin hummed, “I will, but this is because I’m as selfish.”

“I don’t deserve you,” Jaejoong whined, looking up at his lover with swollen red-rimmed eyes.

The other chuckled, hugging Jaejoong tighter. “Will you ask me to?”

“No…”

“I figured.” Changmin kissed Jaejoong’s forehead and let go of the other. “One last kiss?”

Jaejoong smiled weakly and tiptoed, pressing the sweetest goodbye kiss he had ever given anyone on Changmin’s lips. Changmin smiled back, wiped Jaejoong’s tears one last time, and turned around. Each step he took felt like another needle pierced on Jaejoong’s heart, but Changmin didn’t look back, not even once. Jaejoong was more than thankful for that.

Right when Changmin’s hand pulled on the doorknob, however, he turned around with a sad smile. “It was amazing while it lasts.”

Jaejoong smiled back and wiped his tears, promising himself he wouldn’t break again. “Thank you, Min-ah.”

Changmin nodded and walked away, closing the door behind him, putting an end to the story they had woven together.

Jaejoong decided; Changmin would be his last boyfriend.

Sometimes fate throw people together just to break them apart. It’s a cruel joke, really, because they could have had the world together. They could be the happiest couple in the world together, but maybe human are not meant to be completely happy, because no matter how happy you are with someone who loves you, it wouldn’t compare to being with someone you love back.

“Where’s my best man?”

Yoochun walked up to Jaejoong, in his white wedding suit, looking as gorgeous as ever. He got his hair cut short, black locks framing his round face. Jaejoong unconsciously compared him to the image of Yoochun when he was younger. Yoochun never cut his hair short before he met Yunho, brown locks curling up to his shoulder. The short hair made him look a lot more mature, and Jaejoong refused to acknowledge the man standing in front of him was the same man who had shared baby crib with him 25 years ago.

“Hey handsome,” Jaejoong grinned anyway, caressing Yoochun’s cheek.

Yoochun smiled back too, “Hello gorgeous. Who are you bringing today?”

Jaejoong scoffed, “No one. But I’ve met Changmin earlier, if that’s what you’re asking.”

Yoochun let the topic drop. He never knew why or how they broke up, but Jaejoong had never been in a serious relationship since. He stayed friends with Changmin, though, and Yoochun and Yunho had become good friends with the man as well. Jaejoong said it was better that way; that he wouldn’t have to break another heart like he did to Changmin. Since then he had been jumping from one person to another for one night stands. If anyone was hoping more from him, he was quick to sever the ties before anyone can keep him for too long.

“How are you feeling?” Jaejoong asked as he tightened Yoochun’s tie and smoothed his best friend’s tuxedo.

“Nervous,” Yoochun bit his lip and glanced around. “Yunho had taken cared of everything, as usual, that perfectionist, but really…I’m very, very nervous.”

Jaejoong laughed, patting Yoochun’s head. “It’ll be fine! It’s Yunho!”

“I know,” Yoochun sighed and smiled.

Jaejoong smiled back. “Are you happy?”

“Yes, very,” Yoochun replied without a trace of hesitance.

“Good, that’s all I care about.” Jaejoong pulled him into a bear hug. Yoochun was quick to return the hug, burying his face on the junction of Jaejoong’s neck.

“I want you to be happy too,” Yoochun mumbled.

“I am happy,” Jaejoong replied, kissing the top of Yoochun’s head. Yoochun pulled away and pouted, but Jaejoong chuckled and cupped his cheeks. “Really,” he convinced him, “I am.”

Yoochun nodded, although obviously still full of doubts. “You know I love you, right?”

The words stung, but Jaejoong smiled back and pulled Yoochun into his arms again. “I love you too, always will.”

“Forever will,” Yoochun smiled wryly.

“Hyung,” Yoohwan popped his head on the door, “Let’s go, it’s time.”

Yoochun whimpered, panic. Jaejoong chuckled and pushed him towards the door. “Hurry, I have to be your best man too, remember?”

Yoochun shot him a smile, half sadness but half relief, “When I throw the flowers, you better catch it!”

Jaejoong chuckled, shaking his head, and walked to the altar, taking his position next to the spot Yoochun would be standing on later. Yunho smiled at him, ever so brightly, and Jaejoong gave a nod of acknowledgement.

“Take care of him, yeah?” he whispered.

“Always,” Yunho assured him.

The music started, and both of them turned to see Yoochun at the other end of the aisle. Happiness visibly radiated off him, his face gleaming. They said someone who is in love glow brighter than others, and looking at Yoochun, Jaejoong had to agree.

Turning to Yunho, he could see the other saw the glow as well. He envied the older for being the reason of Yoochun’s smile, the reason of his happiness the past 4 years, the one to comfort him in Jaejoong’s absence. How he envied Yunho for being able to take Yoochun’s hand and let him up the short stairs, to the altar.

“I do,” Yoochun said, and Jaejoong took a deep breath before closing his eyes. He closed his eyes until the kiss was over, so he wouldn’t have to see how happy Yoochun is with Yunho, so he wouldn’t have to feel worse than he already felt.

The party continued, because time didn’t care even if Jaejoong needed a break.

He escaped to take a glass of wine, watching the newly wed couple from the corner of the room. Yunho had an arm around Yoochun’s waist all the time, with a smile that showed off to the world how happy and in love he is. He tried to wash the bitterness in his heart with the alcohol, but sadly, it didn’t work.

“Hey,” Changmin appeared next to him, holding his own glass of wine.

“Hey,” Jaejoong smiled.

“I’m sorry,” Changmin said.

Jaejoong scoffed and chuckled, “It’s not a funeral.”

Changmin chuckled as well, “Well, it probably is, for you.”

Jaejoong turned to Changmin with a smile, “Why can’t I just be in love with you, Changmin? You’re perfect.”

“Why, thank you. You were in love with me, Jae, but you love him more.”

“How foolish of me.”

Changmin shook his head, “We weren’t meant to be.”

Jaejoong nodded, and Changmin slipped away, heading to a girl he had introduced earlier to Jaejoong as his girlfriend. They looked happy as well. Why is everyone happy except for him?

The guests started gathering at the center of the room. Yoochun was up on the stage again, his back turned to the people below. He was about to throw the flowers. Jaejoong sighed and put the glass down. He saw Changmin kissed the girl’s forehead before she headed to join the crowd, ready to catch the flowers.

He eyed the crowd; all were with similar expressions on his face.

Anticipation.

Laughter.

Happiness.

Love.

Jaejoong turned around and walked away, away from the crowd, away from the wedding. He couldn’t stand it. He had to escape, from Changmin, from Yunho, from Yoochun, from the heartache. He walked fast down the stairs, to the elevator, and to the parking lot, only stopping when he was outside, in front of his car.

He looked up; the moon was full and bright, and he needed a cigarette desperately.

“Hey handsome, you’re alone?” A red haired beauty walked up to him.

“Hey, yourself, beautiful,” Jaejoong grinned. “Heechul, right? Yunho’s best man?”

“Yeah,” the man nodded, “Jaejoong, right? Not enjoying the party?”

“Oh, no, I just don’t feel the need to fight a throng of girls over the flower Yoochun threw.”

Heechul laughed. “Good, me too. They are so in love, it makes me jealous.” He batted his eyelashes, “Say, care to accompany me tonight? I don’t feel like sleeping alone, with everyone being so in love and stuff.”

Jaejoong smirked, “Anything for you, princess.” He opened his car’s passenger door to let Heechul in before climbing to the driver’s seat.

At least he won’t be alone tonight.

And maybe, if he closes his eyes, he could pretend he was happy, having someone to hold through the night.

Maybe, he would find happiness someday…

…even without love.

Even without Yoochun.

It simply wasn’t meant to be.

Sometimes fate throw people together just to break them apart.

Staring at Yoochun in Yunho’s arms, Jaejoong was sure the universe is laughing at him right now.
