PNWRaptors for July 10th

Second full day of volunteer work. STarted with cleaning and refilling the eagles' baths, then cleaning duty, and then the fun part of the day.... Our main job for yesterday involved cleaning the greenhouses. Seriously in 30 degree celsius weather, a birdy greenhouse is not the most comofrtable place to be! We had to weed it, then clean the cages and rake them out. The birds here are in rehab for whatever reason, such as the two peregrines. Adin (if I recall the name correctly) is blind in one eye, and her 'boyfriend,' Crash, has a history of misfortune, having flown into the side of a boat and then electrocuted, and something else I think. There is also a group of kestrels which had just laid eggs, but the eggs did not work out. ANyways, the greenhouse is humid enough that simply sitting in there is enough to make you sweat buckets! I wanted to get some photos of the peregrines, but they are so anxious and nervous when people are in their pens that I thought better of it and just left them as soon as I could.

And we also got to take another hawk walk! But this time with an added bonus. We were shown how to tie the falconer's knot, and how to approach and pick up birds from their perches, and put them back. Which means that we can start helping to put the birds out in the morning and back away in the evening, and bringing them down to the flying field.
