This is a very well thought out post. Obviously you've come up against a conspiracy theorist. I had to unfriend an ex workmate on FB because she was sure that 5G was zapping our brains, and the CV19 vaccine was Bill Gates' attempt to inject us all with microchips which he could use to mine bitcoin... ouch the level of stupidity was too much for me.
I don't get it. What makes people believe this stuff? Why do they think the world is out to get them, and only they have the answers? Does it make them feel better about their otherwise shitty lives?
I think it lends a level of empowerment - like all cultish thinking. In a way fandom does the same thing, gives us a sense of 'family' and identity beyond our own meager resources - an 'in' into secret workings behind those publicly visible on the telly - or these days - the device

Thank you so, so much for this. The amont of disinfrmation, misinformation, and consiracy dog-doo that is currently doing the rounds is having a serious impact on my mental health. It's hard to decide which is worse, but I reckon that the anti-vax/anti-mask (Covid deniers) take it. Their rhetoric is having severe impacts on the lives, and leadong to the deaths, of many.
Thank you - I was a bit worried about oversimplifying the science, but when you're up against an argument that states as fact that you can contract a virus from a radio wave - I think nuance has already left the room...
Brilliant summary and beautifully (and clearly) expressed.
But - you do realise you're preaching to the converted?! And even if you've given some of your readers information or analogies they can use to spread the word, there's still the problem that people in general take, from their reading and listening, whatever supports their current beliefs. So the conspiracy theorists who want to burn down 5G masts will either not read your (or my) words, or will ignore them.
I enjoyed your post very much - but it supports my current beliefs, so I would, wouldn't I?!
I'm amused that I read this just after posting my own long explanation of my political stance.
I've just read your long explanation of your political stance, I've pinned for reply when I have the energy for the considered response it deserves, but it was interesting to read :0)
I know the converted filter out anything outside of their bubble - but a truth is always worth speaking - and always eventually wins, even if we don't live to see it.
