Writing Meme Doing the Rounds

Mar 24, 2018 21:22

I need to break my recent duck with Lj at some point, so I'm posting my answers to the meme thingy I first saw jantojones post (who apparently stole it from spikesgirl58) - and I'm stealing glennagirl's idea of linking to the relevant stories. So basically, it's all theft!

1. What was the first fanfic you ever wrote?

Well, if it's wrote, that would be a million years ago - and, if memory serves, it was Space 1999. Before that, all my fic was original sci-fi, and I may yet return to my first love and give posting original stories a go, once I work out where and how.

If it's posted, that would be Spock & No1 (ST:TOS - very TOS - it's based on the first 60's pilot), I've linked to a self-review I posted to my journal (from which you can link directly to the story on FF.net), in case anyone is interested in my more recent thoughts on the fic.

2. Is there anything you regret writing?

Not exactly, I wish other people liked Spock & No1 - Contemplation (ST:TOS) and A Hill of Beans (Pros) more than they do, but then the first is an obscure het paring, and the second is gen/het in a predominantly slash fandom - so it serves me right for being perverse.

The only thing I actually regret posting isn't exactly a fic - it was a meme I answered as the characters from the three fandoms I scribble in. There were 44 questions, and I posted it in two parts (imaginatively entitled: Meme on a Theme...PT I and Meme on a Theme...PT II), but although I enjoyed the silliness of writing it, Lj made it such a pig to post that I still can't bring myself to access it, even to reply to the comments. Posting it was by far my worst Lj experience - I had similar, but not quite as severe, problems posting a story to a comm a little while after - and I now won't post creatively to Lj at all - I only play in comms where you're allowed to link off-site.

3. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.

Oooo - hard, what do I have a soft spot for? Well, I think the thing I have the softest spot for is my one and only vid (Pros - AO3), but that probably doesn't count, so perhaps it's my flawed opus The April Rose (MFU). I lost my courage and failed it.

4. What fic do you desperately need to rewrite or edit?

Perhaps The April Rose, but it is what it is, they all are. I'm more disposed to learn the lessons and move on.

5. What’s your most popular fanfic?

By anything I can measure, Old MacDonald (MFU), which is a bit unfortunate, since it's not the sort of fic I'd want to spend a lifetime writing.

7. What do you hate more: Coming up with titles or writing summaries?

Summaries - they're a definite beggar - and I only employ them where it's a requirement of the comm to which I'm posting. I enjoy coming up with titles.

In lieu of summaries, I usually post a relevant quote from the beginning of the fic. I don't post quotes from later in the fic because I want people to be able to enjoy the story without their subconscious playing 'Where's Wally' looking for it.

8. If someone were to draw a piece of fanart for your story, which story would it be and what would the picture be of?

I quite often illustrate my own (one of the many reasons I decamped to AO3). The Pros Big Bang is a collaborative challenge, and I was lucky enough to be able to work with gvenanne for my first outing last year.

9. Do you have a beta reader? Why/Why not?

No, and unlike jantojones, I can't plead brevity. I'm happy to welcome con crit, but I prefer not to be edited. I'm not publishing professionally, I post for fun, and I prefer to be 'me' in my writing. Warts and all. (And I do accept there are warts...)

My writing is often about catharsis.

10. What inspires you to write?

I can't recall ever being inspired by asparagus, but who knows what the future holds? Just about everything inspires me, comments, articles, memories, things I witness, things that happen to me, you name it.

11. What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your writing?

People most often comment that I've made them cry, but they rarely seem to hold it against me...

12. Do you listen to music when you write or does music inspire you? If so, which band or genre of music does it for you?

Yes I do, fan vids mostly - so any and every type of music! (If I'm not listening to fanvids, I have eps running.)
