This is in response to Dan's questions after my last post, lets hope that I do them justice.
How was it?
Satisfying, fun, tiring and successful. We managed to achieve our targets, and we had a good time, there were very few problem caches- and we think that a better stab at them will get them done. We did not make as good time as we wanted to on a good few caches. To get around that issue we headed in to Fife instead of staying in Dundee to get a higher concentration of caches to find. We really need to be hit on the head the next time we say lets not take the tent we will just sleep in the car. It is even worse when we do that and don't even clear out the car first and have three blankets with us. I hope we will learn that some day- but we slept in the car next to a golf course- Kit even managed to sleep until 6 in the morning.
What was the best/worst/hardest of the day?
The hardest ones we will go back to, I am sure they are there, but doing them with fresh eyes is probably a good idea. A good fun one was GC1P1AJ, this was a challenge at a 4dif 1.5ter, however success was within 15 min, and it felt good to have a good think. We enjoyed the virtual GC67F4, it was the type of thing to be right up Kit's street. The one that showed me something special of Dundee that I did not know before was GC25AZB- a lovely little urban cache that we were not disappointed in when we went back to find it when muggles moved on.
How do you keep going for 24 hours?
You don't, you plan a break or two, and cache either side. For us we left after I finished work on the Thursday, got to Dundee cached as much as we could stopped for a snack at GC1QCX3 which I thought was wonderful. Cached until we were too tired to think clearly and drove out of Dundee to somewhere quiet, and had as much sleep as you can in an uncomfortable car. Wake up when you do (it is never that long a sleep in a car) and then get on again, we also had the time restriction of the monthly caching event in Stirling that it was our turn to run. The other things are to keep plenty of food and to make sure that the plan is flexible enough to cope with moving around to suit what you want to do.
What kind of planning goes into such an adventure?
Planning wise, wow there are lots of caches there, what type are they, can we afford the diesel do they look like caches that we want to do, how muggle intense will it be when (do city centers at night if possible. Run the PQ, make sure everything is on the devices and they all have power. The other thing that helped was to have a target in mind for what we wanted to get done, it helped to motivate us when the tiredness set in. We also look for a few that are ones that we really wanted to do, so that we had something more to go for than just pure numbers.
Also, we had it as a mini break away for us- time to spend together with a focus of what we wanted to do, that made it more fun than it could have been for us without each other's company.
