Are you bored? Have nothing special to do? If you get into this topic then you will find something to do for the rest of your night.
Free will.
I had a debate about this with my brother a few weeks back and we ended up having a two hours chat. It is really something that makes your head spin. If you imagine a situation where free will does not exist do we really have the right to put criminals in prisons if they didn't have any control over their actions.
First of all, I do not believe in free will which basically means that in the end I have no control over anything. I'm just a slave to physical laws. I presented this case to my brother as what would make our brains so different from all the other materia found in the universe. A ball hits the floor when you drop it. If you push a ball it will start to roll. In a simple case when you drop the ball on the floor you have a simple body of certain conditions - the energy with what the hand holds the ball in the air and gravity. When you look at these conditions closely, you should be able to predict what is going to happen next; the ball is going to drop on the floor with a certain speed. This is a simple case. A process of thought is a complex case but in the end is it really different from everything else around us? Is our brains special and outside of the physical laws?
OK, so I can't really explain this very understandably but just a few days ago I found this video from YouTube. It's a clip from an anime movie called Waking Life. It tells the idea what I had but in a much better way. Just watch it. It will make you think. And we can never have enough of that.
