Have been productive lately. It's nice. Over the holiday weekend it was a Regency petticoat in addition to other smaller projects and this last weekend it was an early Victorian(ish) hoopskirt made from garden hose and bed sheets with a petticoat to match.
For the short stays I followed the pattern from Sense and Sensibility (purchased from Patterns of Time) fairly closely. In retrospect, handkerchief linen was not a good choice for the outer and lining layers as the small yet precise pieces were hard to keep in their proper shape. Well, that and what Denver Discount Fabrics promised was peach turned out to be awfully pink for my tastes. Oh well. It's underwear. For the petticoat I pulled the bodice from the Regency Lady's Evening Dress from Reconstructing History but then abandoned the pattern half way through when I couldn't figure out how the hell anything resemblem straps or a neckline fit into it. So I just stole the straps from the short stays pattern and then made up the rest as I went along.
Hoop skirt is a work in progress, but done enough to hang on a dress form and serve as motivation instead of laying balled up in a corner like it has been for the last six months since I started working on it. Thank you,
bob6n3_4 for the regular prodding and really the whole idea of making costumes from things found at the hardware store in the first place. I have a fully encased boning (hosing?) channel along the hemline but that was a bitch to thread so I tried putting loops on the other two. I either need more loops or to replace them with channels, I haven't decided yet. I'll also either put a ruffle along the hemline or a second ruffle under the first on the petticoat. I followed the instructions from
Truly Victorian's free hoop petticoat pattern, but the ruffle is made with only double the length (skirt portion is four yards around, ruffle is eight) and I kinda of think I like the look of tripple the length better, which is what I put into my petticoats to go over the bustle.
In other awesomeness, I've finally finished training at my new job and move to second shift starting today. Hence the faffing about on the internet at ten in the morning. I'm hoping to keep the costuming motivation going and get back to working on things in the mornings when I have the house to myself. My voracious appetite for Sherlock fic has settled a bit so that ought to help. And I ran out of Teen Wolf to binge on and seem to have lost interest in the new series of Doctor Who.
So, what's keep all of you occupied these days?
