For the last couple of maternal phone calls over the weekend, I've gotten "So is it spring there yet?" and "It was hot here today!"
Well, on Sunday it was springlike. Our snow melted, and the cat played outside with glee and even leaped into the air to try to catch a bird as it flew by (she missed).
Yesterday it rained, and the temperature sunk 20 degrees over the course of the day.
Overnight, it got even colder and continued to rain.
This morning, I woke to the sound of hail rattling the window.
It is now about two degrees above freezing. The hail is lying, half-melted, on the soaked and gleaming surfaces outside.
TWO DEGREES above freezing. The temperature's scheduled to drop. If it drops just two degrees, all those wet surfaces are going to become a single perfect unbroken sheet of ice. If I had a pair of skates, I could go outside to get the mail.
And my mother asked "Is it spring there yet?" *whimper*
