Title: Swatch Board
Rating: PG-13 (use of some bad words that Finn used during the episode)
Spoilers: For Theatricality
Characters: Finn/Kurt (friendship, pre-slash), Tina
Summary: After the events of Theatricality, things between Finn and Kurt aren't perfect.

Finn felt good. Really good. Because see, Finn wasn't a bad person. He wasn't one of those people who discriminates against other people and uses hate speech and does all that bad stuff. His mom raised him better than that, and just... that wasn't him. And Finn was proud of himself, because he'd proven it. Granted, he'd worn a completely ridiculous outfit to do it, but he'd done it!

And maybe moving in with the Hummels wouldn't be so bad, he thought, as he packed his possessions. There weren't very many of them, he realized, but that was alright. Maybe now he and Kurt could be friends, and they could go shopping together or something. Not that Finn really liked Kurt's taste in clothes, but it would be a good way for them to like, hang out. And Finn could show how accepting he was. Yeah, it would be great.

And so it was with a light heart that he prepared for move-in day. Burt had pulled him aside and they'd had a long talk, and apparently Kurt had talked to his father as well. Burt was willing to ignore the previous incident (which Finn was more than happy to do as well) as long as nothing like it ever happened again. One negative comment, and Finn was out. No argument.

Still, though. It would be good. He carried a few boxes down to the room he'd be sharing with Kurt, wondering which side of the room would be his, and then dropped them, startled.

The room was back to the way it was. White. There was a small wall down the middle of the room, high enough so that one couldn't see the person on the other side, but low enough to show that it was temporary (probably until a new wall was erected).

All the decorations were gone. Everything was just white. Finn was only able to tell which side was Kurt's because of the desk with papers on it, and the laptop sitting on top of the bed. But still. White.

Kurt emerged from the bathroom and looked at him. "Hey, Finn. That side of the room is yours. Do you need help with anything?"

"What happened to all the decorating you did?"

"Got rid of it," Kurt replied, smoothly.

Finn sighed. "Look, I know I said some stuff about it, but... I was wrong. And I can take it back. You can put that stuff back up, if you want."

Kurt shook his head. "One should feel comfortable in one's own living space. You can feel free to decorate your side of the room however you want, though. Until then, I felt that this design would work for both of us." He cleared his throat. "In addition, I'd like to apologize for being so forward for you. As you've realized, I did have feelings for you, and I did think that living with you would be a way to become closer to you. It was foolish. I assure you that when we live together now, our relationship will be strictly roommate-like."

Kurt then went upstairs to help bring in boxes, leaving Finn staring after him in shock.

Living with the Hummels was... way different. There was a lot to get used to. Their TV was awesome, which meant that Finn got to watch lots of sports games with Burt. His mother bonded with Kurt through cooking and shopping, which meant that dinner was even more delicious than usual, and his mom looked really, really good. And Finn could poop for like, an hour, and not feel bad about it.

Going to sleep shouldn't have been awkward. It was just sleep, after all. Kurt did his nightly skin care routine (which took an entire hour) in silence, and didn't talk to Finn at all, unless it was strictly necessary, and that was awkward. Didn't roommates usually talk to each other sometimes?

On weekends Kurt disappeared. For the entire weekend. And that kinda hurt, because Finn was hoping to be able to spend that time with his new step-brother, doing whatever step-brothers did. But from after school on Friday to Sunday night, Kurt was missing, and his father didn't find anything wrong with it.

He was at the grocery store on a Sunday afternoon when he saw Tina there, eying the chips and salsa critically. "You should totally get the chips that are little scoops for the dip, those are the best," Finn told her.

She considered them. "Well, that's true, but they're not organic, and I don't want Kurt yelling at me."

Finn blinked. "You're hanging out with Kurt?

Tina shrugged. "We're having a girl's night. Well, by girls I mean him and me and Mercedes and Artie and Brittany and Santana. And maybe Rachel. But yeah."

Finn frowned. "I wasn't invited."

Tina gave him a strange look. "Well, you wouldn't want to come, would you? It's gonna be all stuff you wouldn't like, anyway. Face masks, Disney movies." She smiled, gently. "Trust me, we're doing you a favor.

As Finn walked away, he took out his cell phone and called Kurt. "Hello?" Kurt asked, in a tense voice.

"Hey, dude!" Finn replied, trying to be cheerful. "What's up?"

"Not much... is there something I can help you with?"

Finn frowned. "Yeah, well... I was wondering what you're doing tonight."

"I have plans," Kurt responded. "However, if you're bored, I believe that there's some kind of sporting event my father plans on watching. I'm sure he'll be happy to have you join him."

"But I--" Finn stared at the phone. Kurt had hung up.

Finn thought hard the rest of the night, and by the next afternoon he had an idea. Not a particularly good idea, probably, but an idea. Which was definitely a start, he figured. And so he waited. He sat at his desk, the desk Kurt would have to pass as he entered the room, and waited.

Eventually, Kurt entered the bedroom, nodded at Finn, and headed to his side of the room.

"Hey, Kurt?" Finn asked, hoping Kurt would respond. "I was wondering if you could help me with something?"

"What is it?" Kurt asked, still over on his side of the room.

Finn swallowed. "Can you come over here, please?"

Kurt crossed to the other side of the room, arms folded over his chest. "Yes?"

Finn gestured to the swatch board in front of him, which very similar to the one Kurt had brought to Glee practice that one time. "I was thinking that we should redecorate this room... and I thought we should do it together."

"You can decorate your side of the room any way you want, Finn. It makes no difference to me."

Finn frowned. "But I mean... we both live here. This is our room. So it should be both of us doing it."

"In that case, you can choose whatever you want for both sides of the room. I don't spend much time here anyway, so it doesn't matter to me."

"Yeah - dude, have you been avoiding me?" Finn sighed. "I know what I said. And I know that what I said was really shitty. And I feel like ever since then, we haven't been as good of friends."

Kurt scoffed. "Really? You think?" He rolled his eyes. "Just choose whatever is the least faggy and I'll be fine."

Finn sighed. "I shouldn't have said that to you. I didn't mean it."

"Yes you did, Finn. Whether or not you choose to admit it, you said it because you believe it."

"Well, I'm sorry! I even wore that crazy outfit to show how sorry I am! Aren't you ever gonna forgive me, man?"

"I have no right to be mad at you for stating your beliefs, Finn. Therefore, you have no reason to apologize, and I have no reason to be apologized to."

"But Kurt, I really want us to be friends again. I don't want some stupid thing I said to come in the way of that, especially since we're living together."

Kurt looked at him coldly. "Just because we're living together doesn't mean we need to be friends. And truthfully, I'm not sure I want to be friends with you at all."

Finn nodded. "I get that. And I understand that. I just want you to know, though... I'm gonna keep trying. You... this... I care, okay? Things may not be the way you want them to be between us, and I'm not sure they ever can be, but... I care. And I'm not giving up."

Kurt looked at him, finally, for the first time in weeks. "Thank you, Finn... that... means a lot to me."

"Do you think you'll be able to forgive me?" Finn asked, hesitantly.

Kurt sighed. "I do have a soft spot for you," he admitted. "But it's going to take time. You're more than welcome to keep trying."

Finn decided, then and there, that he absolutely would.

This might be continued. But if it is, it might be Kurt/Mike. Thoughts?
