Comfort
They could hear the raised voices from up in their rooms.
Kurt knew that every couple fought sometimes, they couldn’t get along perfectly all the time and it was lucky that things had been quiet between Burt and Carole for so long but now they were fighting over something and Kurt wasn’t even sure what.
Finn wasn’t taking it so well though.
When Kurt had left his room to go to the bathroom, he could hear quiet sobbing coming from inside the room. He paused before he knocked gently on the door. He heard a sniff before Finn spoke up.
“Yeah?” he called, his voice shaky.
Kurt bit his lip before he tried the handle and pushed the door open. He could see Finn sat on the floor, back against his bed with his head resting on his knees. In the dim light he could just see the tears running down his face. He rushed inside, crouching down beside Finn. Placing a hand on his shoulder, he squeezed gently as he looked down at him with a worried frown.
“Finn…what’s wrong?” he asked quietly.
No response.
“Finn…”
“They’re fighting…”
Finn’s voice broke half-way through the sentence, his eyes welling up again as he looked up at Kurt pleadingly.
Not knowing what else to do, he sat down and wrapped his arms around the larger male, bundling him forwards so Finn huddled into his chest, body half-slumped in his lap as he sobbed quietly. Kurt reached around to card his fingers through his thick, brown hair, humming quietly as he let him break down within his arms.
He wasn’t too keen on being so close to anyone, both of them knew that but he also knew that Finn was a very physical person and this was the only thing that was really going to help right now.
They stayed like that until the fighting had stopped and they’d heard the front door go.
Slowly, Finn pulled away and wiped at his eyes with a sniff.
“Sorry about that dude I just…whenever my mom gets into a fight with her boyfriends…they always seem to break up soon after and I can’t…I can’t deal with it. Especially not someone as great as Burt,” he admitted. He slid further along the floor as he tried to compose himself, ignoring the soft way that Kurt was looking at him.
“We’re not going anywhere any time soon Finn. My dad loves Carole with all his heart but all couples fight some times. Surely you know that? You certainly fight with Rachel enough,” Kurt replied as he moved slightly closer and placed a hand on his upper arm, squeezing gently.
“Right…of course I know that. I just get worried,” Finn said as he turned his head to smile at Kurt. He reached out to playfully punch him in the arm.
“Thanks dude for y’know, not laughing at me or anything. Seems like a pretty weak thing to do,” he added with a chuckle.
Kurt heard Finn call out to his mom as he got up and stumbled out into the hall way to comfort her like the good son he was.
Obviously Finn didn’t think of couples arguing in the same way Kurt did because sometimes it was the only way he could imagine that he and Finn were actually together.

Petals and Tears
“When are you going to get it Kurt! I’m not…I’m not interested in you and I never will be!”
Kurt stared across the kitchen at him, a bowl tipped over on the floor on front of them with cake mix spilling out of it. Finn was a few steps away, hands curled into fists as he looked about wide-eyed and shaking.
“I’m not…I can’t…I…don’t want you constantly flirting with me like that! I thought you were over me and then you…were just…with the cake mix and I-” Finn stuttered, trying not to freak out even more as he stepped further away from the bowl.
“I was just playing with you Finn. I thought it would be okay and in a brotherly nature, I didn’t think you would over react otherwise I wouldn’t have done it,” Kurt responded coolly, crossing his arms as he tried to keep his face blank.
He couldn’t let Finn know how much this was actually hurting him.
He had worked so hard to get over Finn but it was a near impossible task. No matter how hard he pushed him away, no matter who else he went after or dated, he just couldn’t get over him. Even when something like this happened and he tried to focus on how nasty Finn could be, he couldn’t fall out of love with him.
Finn snorted,
“No Kurt, no you weren’t. You knew exactly what you were doing. Don’t think I haven’t seen the way you look at me sometimes. You don’t even look at Blaine like that and he’s your boyfriend so don’t you go playing the innocent card,” he retorted.
The words stung like a slap to the face and all Kurt could do was raise his head higher and fight back the tears.
“And you so encourage me moving on. If you’re really not interested then stop acting like you are. What am I supposed to think when you do things like for me at the wedding? And you were throwing off pretty clear signals of interest earlier,” he snapped. Not that Finn took such a response well.
“Wha…don’t lie! You’re the one who misread the signals! I was…I was just trying to be a good brother and a good friend!”
It was all just…ridiculous. Finn could use those excuses because what? He was gay? It was a double standard.
Shaking his head, Kurt stepped over the bowl and stalked past the taller male, trying to ignore his aching heart.
“Whatever. I don’t care any more. If dad or Carole need me when they get back, tell them I’m at Mercedes,” he told him, shrugging Finn off as he tried to grab at his shoulder.
He just didn’t need to deal with this right now.
*****
Kurt didn’t return home until the next morning, he usually kept a spare, clean outfit at Mercedes just in case they had an impromptu sleepover because something had happened.
He was cautious as he entered the house but when he heard nothing but silence, he relaxed and let his guard down. He wasn’t ready for another shouting match with Finn or even one of his over the top apologies.
Sighing, he plodded upstairs and headed to his room, dropping his carrier bag just inside of his door. He froze when he saw what had happened to the room though.
On his bed there were rose petals scattered and amidst them there lay a white sheet of paper with something scribbled on it. Curiously, he stepped forwards and reached down to pick it up. His eyes quickly took in what it said but his brain had trouble processing it.
Dear Kurt,
I’m sorry about yesterday, about every time I’ve been rude to you. It’s not like I hate you…far from it actually but I’m just scared.
I just…I really, really like you and I know I’m no good with words and I don’t know if I can give you what Blaine’s supposed to but…I just…really, really like you and it scares me how much I do.
You’re just so beautiful and smart and so talented and…yeah.
I just…
“I’m sorry.”
Kurt whirled around, the letter still clutched tightly in his grasp as he looked at Finn standing in his doorway with his hands in his pockets.
“I really mean every word I say in that letter I was just too scared to admit until now,” he admitted.
And that was all it took.
Kurt dropped the letter and rushed over, his arms looping around Finn’s neck and pulling him down for a kiss.
“I forgive you. I really, really like you too,” he responded, almost in tears with how happy he was.
He finally had his man.

Subtlety
Someone seriously needed to teach Finn the word ‘subtlety’ because he clearly did not know the meaning of the word.
It was amusing at first, how Finn seemed to follow Kurt around like a lost puppy and as soon as someone said something or looked at him funny, he jumped into guard dog mode. He seemed so eager to watch over him, and even when they weren’t together he seemed to be silently fretting, He’d even made sure Kurt sat closely to him during lunch, making sure their sides were pressed together as they ate. Actually, Kurt had seemed quite flustered that day but it seemed as if he didn’t think anyone else had noticed, yeah, right.
But the longer it went on, the more irritating it became.
Even Blaine and Rachel had noticed.
Well, it was kind of hard not to when you were supposed to be going over to their house for a big dinner with their parents only to come in to see Finn had pinned Kurt to the floor and was tickling him. The whole thing had been far from innocent.
Or when Finn insisted on coming and picking Kurt up from a party rather then letting him stay at Blaine’s because he didn’t trust him to look after Kurt right when drunk.
It was all just ridiculously obvious and it was really starting to get annoying.
*****
“So Finn, what you got planned this weekend dude.”
“Nothing. Mom’s going away with Burt so it’s just me and Kurt.”
“Ahhhh so you’re finally going to fuck him senseless?”
“What?! Puck, dude! Why would you say that.”
“We all know you’re dying to.”
“No way!”
“Whatever you say…”
*****
Puck’s assumption was pretty close though and the boys ended up making out but at the end of the weekend they decided that it was a moment of madness and that they should never mention it again.
The next day Finn broke up with Rachel and Kurt broke up with Blaine.
*****
Things got worse after that, they were constantly hanging around each other acting doe-eyed and Finn ended up in detention several times for starting fights with his fellow jocks when they started ragging on Kurt.
It was seriously too much.
*****
“We need to do something about Finn and Kurt. Their obvious sexual tension makes it very hard to to remain the centre of attention and when we’re on stage at Sectionals all eyes will need to be on me.”
Snorts.
In the end they all agreed though, they just had to lock them in a room somewhere and let them sort it out themselves.
The janitor’s closet the next afternoon during lunch worked just fine.
At the end of lunch they came out holding hands with matching dazed looks. They stood there for q few moments, accepting the good natured jibes from their friends before they walked off towards class. It was only then they heard Quinn call out,
“Oh no, now people are really going to think I was Finn’s beard!

Protecting Him
You never plan for these things to happen.
Kurt had dragged Finn and Rachel into the drug store on the way back to theirs, he’d needed to stock up on body scrub but apparently a couple of robbers had decided that the time they were in there was the best time to hit the store for money and drugs.
They took control quickly, trying to get everyone out of the way as they stormed over to the cash register and menaced the staff, demanding they handed over all the money and any drugs they wanted quickly. Eventually one of the men turned and started to stalk about the store with the gun turned on the customers. He eyed each of them carefully before he came upon Kurt, Finn and Rachel. He paused before he turned to his partner.
“Hey! Lookie here, we have a bunch of teenagers. What should we do with them hmmm?” he called out with a grin. He had a few teeth missing and as he leaned in to leer at them, Rachel squeaked and moved away. The man then turned to Kurt,
“Oooh and we have a pretty boy as well. At least we know you can’t do anything other then hit me with your hairspray,” he croaked, laughing slightly
How could Finn stand by and let the man speak to his step-brother and girlfriend like that?
He stepped forwards, squaring his shoulders and clenching his hands into fists just as the other man finished with the money and came towards them.
“Oh no kid, what do you think you’re doing. Get back boy,” the second man growled, squeezing his finger on the trigger slightly but not enough to actually shoot it. Finn shook his head as Rachel grabbed his shirt from behind.
“Finn, please, do as he says,” she pleaded as she tried to pull him back. He turned his head slightly to look down at her and she looked so scared. “Please. If you get hurt then we might too.”
Finn knew that what she was saying was true, if they hurt him then what would stop them from getting her or Kurt? He was about to step back when Kurt stepped out in front of him, arms open in a protective stance.
The two robbers both looked at each other and raised their eyebrows at each other.
“Oh so the pretty boy is taking a stance huh? Trying to protect your boyfriend huh?” the first sneered, leaning in and smirking as he watched Kurt recoil slightly in disgust. But he didn’t step back, he didn’t move back behind Finn.
“What does it matter? We’re not doing anything to you, we don’t care if you want to take money or drugs or any trouble. We don’t want to fight you or anything,” Kurt stated as steadily as possible. He breathed in slowly, glaring at the two men.
With snort, the first man signaled to the second man to come closer and they talked quietly for a few moments before they both turned back to the groups with their guns pointed towards Kurt.
“Fine. You’re just a kid anyway. Step back now or you both get it,” the first man warned with a shrug.
Kurt didn’t moved.
As the men started to pull the trigger, the police crashed through the doors. The staff had pressed the panic button as soon as the men had pulled the guns out and they’d managed to get here just in time.
The guns went off but the bullets ricocheted off the ceiling and the teenagers and other hostages stumbled back and away.
The men were tackled to the floor and arrested, guns being torn away and the money and drugs being returned as other police men came in to check things out.
Finn grabbed a hold of Kurt’s arm, tugging him back as he frowned down at him.
“What did you do that for! They nearly shot you Kurt!” he hissed, ignoring Rachel as she tugged at his shirt again. “You didn’t need to do that! I had things under control!” he added. Kurt just shook his head,
“I couldn’t just stand back and let you do that. If things had gone wrong I…I just can’t think of you getting hurt,” he responded before he rushed out of the store, not even remembering what he’d gone into the drug store for.
*****
“I’m sure Kurt will be fine but you both behaved so stupidly. I understand you wanted to protect me, like the good man you are but it wasn’t necessary. Just letting me hide behind you was fine,” Rachel insisted as she tried to take hold of his hand as they walked slowly back to Finn’s.
But…that didn’t sound right to Finn.
Surely if Rachel cared so much about him, she should have tried harder to stop him or protect him herself?
Like Kurt had done…
He stopped right there on the sidewalk and turned to her, stepping away as he shook his head at her.
“Look Rach…can we not do this now? After all that’s happened…I don’t think you should be telling me what the right thing to do was when all you were trying to do was protect yourself. I’m going home to see if Kurt’s okay since he actually did care,” he said, just looking at Rachel with disbelief before he walked off, leaving Rachel on the street.
*****
Finn found Kurt up in his room, physically shaking as he sat in front of his dresser table doing god knows what. But it was obvious that he was still upset. He’d been acting strong in the shop for everybody’s sake but now he was home…
The moment Finn sat beside him and wrapped his arms around him, Kurt crumpled and started to sob. They sat there for what felt like hours but once Kurt had started to calm down, Finn pulled away.
“Are you okay now?” he asked.
Kurt nodded with a breathy sigh,
“Yeah, I’m fine. I was just…scared that you were going to get hurt and I couldn’t take that. That was the bravest thing I’ve ever done,” he said with an empty laugh. Finn just frowned before he pulled him in for another hug.
“It…it means a lot that you would do that for me Kurt. So…thank you,” he murmured.
“I couldn’t let someone I love get hurt…”
Finn looked at Kurt with a small smile, “and I can’t just sit here and not tell you that I might love you too.”
Kurt stared at Finn unblinkingly until the taller male leaned down to press a gentle kiss to his lips.
And that was enough for now.
