NUMB3RS Main List Chapter 1/3 Chapter 2/3 “Morning.” Charlie greeted when Don woke up on the couch.
“Morning….” Don tried to pull himself up, but he was still half asleep. “What time
is it?”
“Nine.”
“I late….”
“Nine on a Saturday morning.”
“Oh.”
“And everyone else is still asleep. You want coffee?”
“Yeah, thanks.”
Charlie disappeared to the kitchen and came back with two mugs. He handed one to Don. “I’m not sure if that couch was very nice on your back. You reaching that age…”
“What age?”
“That age where you need to keep an eye on where you fall asleep, or you wake up with a stiff back.”
“I’m not that old.”
“Right, and you made those whimpers just for fun.”
“You try sleeping on that couch without a crick in the neck.”
“No thanks.” Charlie took a sip from his mug. “So, any plans?”
“For what?”
“For Saturday.”
Don thought about it for a minute.
“I was supposed to do something….. But I can’t remember what it was…..”
“Ask Martin, he’s coming back today.”
“Today?” Don looked absolutely panicked. “I was supposed to pick him up from the airport!” He leaped up and started rummaging his clothes and pulling them on.
“Don, calm down!” Charlie giggled. “He called me half an hour ago during a stop-over. His flight lands three hours from now.”
“Why the hell didn’t he call me?”
“He called your cell, but you didn’t wake up to answer it. I took it from your coat pocket. And David will be here in ten minutes.”
“Why?”
“He and Ian have some news.” Charlie shrugged.
“Don’t tell me those two are getting married too….”
“That’s not legal here.”
“You know what I mean. I still can’t believe they’ve been together so long…..”
“I know.”
“And I can’t believe you and Grange have been together so long…..”
“I know.”
“And I can’t believe Martin and I have been together so long….”
“You can’t believe much, can you?”
The doorbell rang and Charlie went to let David and Ian in.
“Do I smell pancakes?” David asked and sat down on one of the armchairs.
“No, I burned the French toast.” Charlie admitted. “The big news?”
David gave Ian a small glance. “We better start with another piece of news. Megan’s taking some time off.”
“Why?” Don questioned.
“She had some…. complications after that car crash. Nothing serious.”
“Okay….”
“And then some better news.” David continued. “We’ve made a decision.” He paused and turned to Ian. “You wanna tell them?”
“We’re adopting.”
“You’re what?” Don almost choked on his coffee.
“That’s great!” Charlie beamed. “When, how old, boy or girl?”
“Hold on a minute. We’re not that far yet.” Ian smirked. “We’ve gone thought different options and we’re going to the child care next week to meet some potential kids.”
“Child care?” Charlie tilted his eyebrows.
“Yeah, you know how those places are full of kids who are too old to be adopted. After four or five years nobody wants them, because most of the adoption parents prefer little babies.”
“Awesome.” Charlie smiled.
David leaned against Ian’s shoulder like a proud housewife. “Ian’s gonna limit his gigs so he can stay with the kid for a while, and I got some vacation time saved so I’ll be using that.”
“I’ll…. I’ll handle the paperwork when you know the exact time.” Don said. “Sorry, I’m still little…. stunned.”
“Me too.” David grinned.
“Does anyone want coffee?” Charlie offered. “I have to wake up Colby pretty soon. We need to start driving to the mountains again.”
“I thought you were gonna leave yesterday?” David mused.
“We did, but… it’s a long story. I need another cup of coffee before I can relive that again.” He turned to Don and crinkled his nose. “And you could take a shower and get some fresh clothes.”
“Nahhh, Martin likes it when he gets to give me a sponge bath.” Don grinned. “Wow… I you had told me you ear and a half ago that I would say stuff like that I would have punched you….”
“Yeah, you’ve made a lot of progress.” Charlie chuckled. “And it’s all positive.”
