“Where’s everyone?” Hawkes left his kit on the lab table and leaned over it to
talk to Lindsay.

“Mac and Stella are at the hospital and Danny’s going there when he’s done
with his scene. He said he would send his samples with a trainee.”

“What’s he doing in the hospital?”
Lindsay paused. She gave him surprised look and pulled her gloves off. “Nobody
told you?”
“About what? I just got back and I went to the scene straight from….” He hesitated
for a second. “…lunch.”

“You know the Dalson case that Stella was working on? They went to interview
the neighbour. The guy got agitated and pulled out a gun.” Lindsay took a deep
breath to calm down. “Shots were fired and three of ours were injured. The guy
himself was the fourth. He died on the scene.”

“Was Stella hurt?”
“No, she got away with couple bruises. One of the uniforms shoved her behind a
couch when the firing started. She didn’t even have time to pull out her gun before
the thing was over.”
“So who got injured?”

“I’m not sure how to say this so I’ll just… say it.”
“Okay.”
“Officer Williams died on the way to the hospital.” Lindsay rubbed her temple
with her palm. “He had two years left before retirement.”
“Who else?”
“Officer Martin and Don.”
“Don?”

“Yeah, that’s why Danny was so determined to go to the hospital. He was
really upset.”
“Is he…” Hawkes stammered. “How bad is it?”
“I don’t know. Stella said she would call when they know something. But Martin’s
going to be okay."
“Can you take my samples and drop them off to DNA?”
“Sure, are you going to the hospital too?”
“Yeah, which one is it?”
“Presbyterian.”
“Thanks.” Hawkes handed his samples to Lindsay and rushed back outside. When
he was safely in his car, he banged his hand against the steering wheel. Nobody had
called him about the incident. Then again why would they? He was the one who
wanted to keep it a secret for now. He let out a long sigh.

Hawkes and Danny pulled to the hospital parking lot at the same time. They didn’t
waste time in greetings, both just marched in. Mac was sipping coffee in the waiting
area.

“Have you heard anything?” Danny gushed.
“Not yet. One of the nurses said they should be done pretty soon. Doctor will tell
us more after that.”
“He’s in surgery?”

Mac didn’t have time to answer. Doctor in his scrubs walked to them.
“You’re here for detective Flack?”
“That’s right.” Mac responded.
“I have pretty good news. The gunshot went right through, and luckily missed vital
organs. There’s muscle damage, and three cracked ribs from the fall after the shot,
but considering all the other possibilities, he was very lucky.”

“Can we see him?”
“They’re moving him to the ward, but he’s still pretty out of it. I don’t think he’ll
wake up for at least an hour.”
“Thank you.” Mac dumped his paper cup to the trash. “Can you one of you stay here
for a while? I’ll drive Stella home, they checked her too, just in case.”

“I’ll stay.” Hawkes volunteered.
“Don’t look at me, I’m not going either.” Danny said and sat down on the bench.
“I’ll be back in an hour.” Mac gave them a worried glance and left.

Hawkes sat down on the opposite bench and leaned forward to press his head
against his hands. “Why didn’t you call me?”

Danny looked surprised. “I thought somebody called you. And I wasn’t sure if you
wanted to hear about it from me. Whole thing`s messy as it is.”
“I guess.”
“You know why I said what I said, don’t you?” Danny pulled his glasses off to rub
the bridge of his nose. “He’s my buddy.”

“Yeah.” Hawkes let out a deep sigh. “I know I can be annoy him sometimes, but
usually he looks like… I don’t know. Like he thinks it’s cute or something like
that.”

“He may think it’s cute, but I’m immune so don’t start it now.” Danny chuckled.
“Okay.” Hawkes couldn’t help joining Danny’s chuckle, which had turned into a
giggle. “You know…. I haven’t been out of the morgue that long, I still have to
prove myself on the field.”

“That doesn’t require running your mouth. If you do your job, you don’t need to
prove anything.”

They were interrupted by a plump nurse.
“Excuse me, you’re here for Flack, right?”
“Yep.” Danny got up and Hawkes followed.
“We just moved him to room 374, just down the hall. He should wake up soon.”

“Thanks.” Danny headed to Don`s room with the other man in tow. “You wanna
go in first?”
“Maybe you better go first. I’m not sure if I’m welcome right now.”
“He’ll wanna to see you, get in.”
“I don’t know if-”
“Doc.” Danny interrupted him and smirked. “Get in or I’ll get you in.”

Hawkes had to smile at that. He pulled the door open and went in.
