Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Eric yawned and sniffed. There was a familiar smell in the air. Pancakes. Definitely.
He headed over to the kitchen. Ryan was eating his breakfast while leafing through
the paper.
“Morning.” Eric leaned down to give Ryan a good morning kiss.
“Morning, there’s coffee and pancakes, help yourself.”
“Are you going somewhere?”
“Why do you ask?”
“It’s seven in the morning, and you’re dressed up.”
“Yeah, I got a meeting.” Ryan took a sip from his mug and went back to his paper.
“Are you gonna tell me about it?”
“I’ll tell you later, I don’t wanna jinx it.”
“Since when do you believe in that?”
“Since now. And after that I’m having lunch with Darren.”
“Again?”
“What do you mean?”
“It’s the third time this week. You met the guy last week, and now you two are
best buddies?”
“Be careful, you sound jealous.”
“I don’t!”
“You do. And now that you mentioned it, I wanna talk to you about something.”
“What?”
“Did you follow me yesterday, when I had coffee with Darren?”
“Of course not!”
“Are you sure?”
“How can you even think that?”
“Your car was parked on the other side of the road.”
“That’s just… coincidence.”
“And Darren said he had seen the same car following us the day before.”
“Well, I… I had to handle some errands, I was just…. Fine, I followed you.”
“Why?”
“I don’t like that guy! Too many white teeth. And I bet he dyes his hair!
Nobody’s that blond.”
“Are you serious? You haven’t even met him. Anyway, I have to go. I’ll see
you later.”
“Ryan, wait a sec.” Eric jumped up and run to the living room. “I bought
something for you.” He handed small can over to Ryan.
“Pepper spray?”
“Just in case he tries something.”
Ryan took a deep breath. “Three things. First, I can defend myself if I need to.
Second, we’re meeting in a middle of a busy restaurant. Third, are you out of
your mind?”
“I’m perfectly sane!”
“Yeah, right. We’ll talk about this when you come back from work. If all goes
well, I may have some news to tell by then.”
“What news?”
“I’ll tell you later, I gotta go now. And don’t follow me!”

“Are you trying to break the table?” Calleigh asked and closed her menu. Eric
glanced down at the diner table he had been drumming. “You’ve been doing
that since we came here.”
“I got some things on my mind.”
“What things?”
“Can I be honest? You won’t think I’m going mad?”
“If I think you’re going mad I will tell you. Let’s hear it.”
“I think I’m about the get dumped.”
“Really? I didn’t even know you were dating anyone.”
“It’s pretty new.”
“And so is getting dumped. It’s usually you who does the dumping.”
“Thanks a lot, you’re so supporting.”
“I’m just stating a fact. Why do you think you’re about to be dumped?”
“Because of one sleazy, Swedish gigolo, who has too shiny teeth, and who’s
so annoyingly perfect, that I wanna punch him.”
“Can I be honest? You’re going mad.”
“I knew you would say that.”

Eric opened the door carefully. He could hear faint sounds coming from the
kitchen.
“Get in here, I’m almost ready.” Ryan yelled. Eric walked to the kitchen and
took a moment to look at the display. The table was set for two, a bottle of
wine was waiting and he could smell a delicious scent of lasagna. Ryan
took the pan from the oven and started shoveling it to the plates.
“I have a feeling I’ve been forgiven.” Eric commented.
“Yeah, but don’t do that again. I wanted to celebrate.”
“Celebrate what?”
“Sit down and open the bottle. I have a new job.”
Eric pulled the cork from the bottle. “A job? What kind of a job?”
“Teaching high school chemistry. I mentioned Darren that I had a degree in
chemistry, and he knew a teacher who’s about to retire. I send them my CV,
and they asked me for an interview. I had another meeting with them today,
and I got the job.”
“Wow, that’s great… but what about…?”
“My sight? I told them about it. It’s fine. I’ll get a TA, so I don’t need to do any
fiddling with chemicals and that stuff.” Ryan sighed. “I’ve been jumping up the
walls all day.”
“When do you start?”
“Next month. But I’ll be going there before that, getting to know the place and
so on. Now start eating, before it gets cold.”
“Do we have desert?” Eric asked hopefully.
“It’s my big day, you’re my desert.” Ryan grinned and started forking his
lasagna.
