“No way.” Ryan crossed his arms across his chest and pouted.

“It’s the hospital policy.” Matronly nurse explained patiently. “You’ve been laying down for four days, you’ll need to acclimate.”
“I can walk.”
“Maybe, but you’re not getting  released unless you follow hospital policy.”

Ryan gave up and sat down on a wheelchair. Just then Eric barged in with a rather withered bouquet of flowers.
“I’m here, I’m here. I got held up in the traffic.” He gave the flowers to the patient.
“What did you do with these?”
“I had a little accident on the way, but they looked really nice when I bought them.”
“I’ll take you word for it.” Ryan turned to the nurse. “My ride’s here, can I go now?”

“In  a minute. I’ll go get your papers and then you can leave.” She waddles out of the room.

“Good thing I’m going home, or I would have to strangle that woman.”
“She’s doing her job.”
“And driving me crazy.”
“That is her job.”
“Speaking of job, have you heard anything from the PD?”
“You mean the investigation? They halted it, but seriously…. I don’t think they believed you. I’ve been getting really weird looks.”
“You’ve been getting weird looks for years.”
“Yeah, but they always said horny pervert, not monster who put his boyfriend to the hospital.”
“They’ll forget it.”
“Hopefully.” Eric was quiet for a minute, stepping back and forth from one leg to the other. “I’m sorry about this. I mean…. I never meant to-”
“Eric, stop that or I’ll get a taxi and go home alone. If you want something to feel guilty about I can give you a long list, but this thing is not on that list.”
“Yeah, but-”
“I’ve been laying on my back for days and I got a killer headache, one more word and I’ll call that cab.”

----------------------------------------------------

“I need to clean here and fast. Didn’t you do anything while I was gone?” Ryan marched from the living room to the kitchen, checking out the state of the apartment.

“Sorry, I was too busy waiting for the news to hear if your bonehead is strong enough to handle a blow.”
“Did you get any-” Ryan’s voice suddenly faded. Eric went to the kitchen and found him leaning against the sink.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, just dizzy.”
“I’ll call that doctor.”
“You’re not calling anyone, this is normal after a head injury. I think I’ll go to bed for a minute.”

Eric placed his hand on Ryan’s waist and escorted him to the bedroom. Ryan laid his head down to the pillow and sighed. Eric waited for him to say something.

“Was I going to say something?”
“What do you mean?”
“In the kitchen. Did I say something?”
“You were bitching about cleaning and then you almost asked if I had done something.”
“What?”
“I don’t know you never got that far.”
“Wait a minute…. Okay, I remember. I was going to ask if you got any food.”
“Are you hungry?”
“I’ve been eating hospital food for days. Even all-you-can-eat Jell-O buffet can’t save that.”
“Yeah, I got something. Wait here.”

Eric went back to the kitchen and came back few minutes later, carrying a steaming microwave cup.
“My mom send it.”
“Your mom? What is it?”
“Arroz con pollo.”
“Why can’t you just say it’s chicken with rice?”
“Because I didn’t know you can speak Spanish.”
“Why did she send it?”
“She wanted to know why I haven’t been there for days, and I said you were at the hospital.”
“I’ve never met your mom.”
“Yeah, well…. She kept poking me and I told him about it.”
“How much?”
“That you had an accident when I was at your place, and that we’ve been seeing each other for some time.”
“Seeing each other?”
“I left out the porn-blackmail-bend-over-and-do-as-I-say-bitch phase.”
“Too bad.”
“I gotta warn you….. She knows you got out today.”
“So?”
“She knows you’re gonna be on a medical leave for two weeks.”
“And?”
“And she knows I`ve used all my vacation days.”
“Are you ever going to get to the point? You’re like an airplane circling the airport waiting for a permission to land.”
“She offered to come and see you during the days.”
“Offered?”
“Well…. She didn’t exactly leave me any other alternatives. She’s gonna be here to check on you tomorrow and she’ll bring lunch.” Eric paused and waited for the explosion.

For his surprise it didn’t come. Ryan just looked at him. Then he started laughing uncontrollably.

“What’s so funny?”
“That whole thing.” Ryan control his giggles. Suddenly a thought dawned on him and he stopped. “Wait a minute. You said she would bring lunch.”
“Yeah.”
“And you’re going to be working tomorrow.”
“Yeah.”
“In other words she’s coming here to meet and feed a total stranger while you’re on the other side of Miami.”
“Yeah.”
“And say something else besides yeah!” Ryan held his head, closing his eyes for a moment. “And don’t aggravate a sick person.”
“She’s a really nice woman.”
“I’m not doubting that, but usually when you meet the guys parents for the first time the guy is actually around to handle the introductions.”
“I told her the basics about you. And I showed that picture I have in my wallet.”

Ryan looked at him. He kept opening his mouth like a goldfish, but couldn’t speak. He looked absolutely horrified.

“Don’t look like that! It wasn’t the nude picture.”
