it really did snow last night

So, just last post I mentioned that I wanted to do creative output every day, and that I would be posting sketches. Well, here is that post. Be warned, this has multiple large images. I don't necessarily mean file-size wise, they just kind of... sprawl. Because I don't know how to lay out comics in a way that makes sense.

And I'm totally going to call it "nanowritethings" now because I stick with my snap/idiotic decisions. I don't care that "drawing" isn't in the name at all, or that "novel" and "write" are both there, and I'm actually doing nothing but doodling so far. JUDGE ALL YOU WANT, IT WON'T HURT ME.

To begin: I am kind of self-conscious about posting actual attempts at drawing, but do please keep in mind that I've had the bare minimum of learning crap about how to draw, and these are all doodles I did in pen on post-its at work.

SO: I managed to successfully make all of one sketch of the main character of my comic book idea, even though I would actually envision her looking a little older and not quite as pretty. Right now, I'm just trying to get a grasp on drawing distinct characters in a consistently recognizable way, which is hard for me, and maybe a bit of an ambitious goal, given that I can't even accomplish basic symmetry most of the time. Anyway, close-up sketch one of maincharactersub1 (there is a maincharactersub2, but I have had no luck at all with her):

Not awful, not great. It would take a tremendous amount of practice and some training to get a hang of drawing to the point where I'd probably be comfortable even storyboarding, so I don't know how much this comic idea will pan out (probably not much), but I'm having fun giving it a go anyway.

The second sketch I feel kind of OK posting was just supposed to be part of a whole post-it full of different expressions. I got the first one and fucked up the second so much that I scratched it out and turned it into OCTOPUS FACE MONSTER:

Now! Clearly octopus face monster isn't the best name for him, since he doesn't appear to have eight limbs. But that was another snap/idiot decision I made that I refuse to go back on. NATURALLY, octopus face monster started to get his own series.

This is largely no good because, with the way I colored in his tentacles, it looks like a giant mustache. And I don't know why he has arms. Well, I do. It was part of a terrible initial decision to give him a body, which I actually did go back on, just because I didn't like it. So my whims are really unpredictable as far as snap/idiot decisions go, I guess.

I feel that Gene's coworker (I'm guessing that guy is a coworker) has a legitimate question there. What's going on with his body, is it actually a giant mustache, etc. But Gene is a monster.

Gene you are never going to get a date with that attitude.

ms paints i actually draw by hand, ms paints, nanowritethings, meg is a failbot
