Bringing Her Up Right by FinnFan

Denise Romanov wasn't a stupid kid. At the age of seven she was pretty damn sure what the differences between men and women were and what you should or should not be doing with them . . . according to Mommy and Daddy.

So when she saw her two favorite teachers kissing, it slightly rocked her world.

~o~o~

Denise had always thought of Mr. Kinney as cute. His eyes were of a funny color and when he smiled, it made Denise giggle.

Mr. Taylor was cute, too. His blond hair was always flopping down on his left eye, and he was always so nice to the kids, so that gave him extra points.

Together, Mr. Taylor pressed against the teachers' office door, they looked doubly cute, and Denise had trouble remembering what her parents had told her about two men going kissy-kissy.

Denise couldn't help the giggle that escaped from her lips when Mr. Taylor's legs slightly rose off the floor as Mr. Kinney hugged him tighter.

Denise smiled widely as her teachers quickly sprung apart, sounding like they had just got out of gym class.

"Denise," Mr. Taylor started, fixing his clothes, "umm, what are you doing here?"

"I came to show you the picture I finished," Denise answered, offering the now slightly crumpled drawing paper.

Mr. Taylor took the drawing and looked at it while Mr. Kinney stood by and tried not to look weird.

Denise had to ask about it, "Why do you look so weird?"

Mr. Kinney looked kind of startled. "Weird?"

Denise nodded. "Is it because you were kissing? I know I would look weird if I kissed a boy."

Her face must have looked funny because Mr. Taylor laughed. "I think it's more because someone saw us kissing."

"Me?"

Mr. Taylor turned serious. "Yes."

"Is it because your mommy told you not to?"

Mr. Kinney smirked. "Sort of."

Denise nodded, serious. "My mommy tells me not to, too. All the time. But she said not to kiss girls, and that boys can't kiss boys. It was an abmo, abom, aboma--"

"Abomination?" Mr. Kinney helped.

"Yeah," Denise smiled brightly.

The teachers exchanged a look.

"That's something bad, right?" Denise asked, seeing the glance. "Then how come you're kissing?"

Mr. Taylor frowned. "Well, we don't see it as bad . . ."

"It doesn't look bad," Denise amended.

Mr. Taylor smiled. "No. And we do it because we love each other--"

Mr. Kinney's eye roll went unnoticed.

"--just like your parents."

"Then why don't my parents like it?" Denise asked with a frown.

"People are afraid of what they don't understand."

"Mommy and Daddy are scared?"

Mr. Taylor shrugged. "Sort of, yes."

"Wow!" Denise exclaimed, eyes as big as saucers. "I need to tell them you're not scary. You're cute!"

This time Mr. Kinney's scoff went unnoticed.

Mr. Taylor smiled sadly. "I don't think that's going to work. And you sort of have to keep this a secret."

"Why?"

"Because we can lose our jobs, doing . . . this here . . . with each other."

"Bummer."

Mr. Kinney snorted. "Yeah, it is, but it has to be a secret."

Mr. Taylor continued, "Our little secret. Okay?"

Denise liked the sound of that. "Yeah! Our little secret." She smiled at Mr. Taylor but then noticed the big clock on the wall. "Oh, lunch is almost over, I have to go to class!" Denise exclaimed and rushed off.

Mr. Kinney waited until Denise had run around the corner, then said, "You know she's gonna tell her parents right this evening. And then they're gonna brainwash her into a cute little homophobe."

Mr. Taylor glanced at his colleague. "I don't know . . . She's pretty smart."

"Smart enough to avoid her own parents' sin-bullshit? I don't think so."

"You never know," Mr. Taylor muttered as he looked at the paper he still held in his hand. The picture had a couple holding hands on it, both of them looking suspiciously male.

"She might just turn out the greatest fag hag there was."

Author's Note in response to some feedback: No, I *don't* think it's correct behavior for Brian and Justin to be telling Denise to keep this "a little secret", nor is it smart for them to be making out on school property in the first place, but, alas, I think sometimes people's judgment can slip in the heat of the moment and when you're caught, you most definitely ask them not to say anything to anyone else. That's human behavior. Deal with it.
