you should try yoga breathing. we do it during class and it makes a hugggggggeeeee difference in my stress levels. i've been practicing it before bed and when i wake up and i've been feeling a lot more tranquil because of it. here are some techniques:
Alternate Nostril Breathing (this one is my favorite and helps the most, but has a few steps):
1. Close the right nostril with your right thumb and inhale through the left nostril. Do this for four counts.
2. Immediately close the left nostril with your right ring finger and little finger, and at the same time remove your thumb from the right nostril. Immediately, but slowly, exhale through your right nostril. Do this for eight counts.
3. Inhale through the right nostril for four counts. Close the right nostril with your right thumb (while releasing your left nostril) and exhale through the left nostril for eight counts.
Do this as many times as you want.
Throat Breathing (in this one, you make some noise, so it's kind of funny at first, but it helps a lot too):
1. Open your mouth slightly so that air can easily flow in and out.
2. Inhale until you feel as though you can't inhale anymore
3. Hold for four counts
4. Exhale through your open mouth. Push the air out so that you make a loud-ish sighing sound.
Do this as many times as you want as well.
Also, if you have a cold or your nose is stuffed up, only do the Throat breathing. Alternate Nostril Breathing shouldn't be obstructed by snot or else it won't help stress, it will just create it because you'll be frustrated that it's not work.
