A great intellectual, wit and writer has passed on. The City and the Pillar really was a groundbreaking queer novel; I am particularly partial to his Julian, on the that wonderful if historically doomed emperor. He wrote the screenplay for Ben Hur, too, sneaking in that homo subtext. I am old enough to remember him on TV talk shows, from an era when America still tolerated intelligence.

May he find sustenance in the symposia that lie beyond.
