this was my submission to mcsweeny's 20 minute story contest:

Alicia Straus was beginning to wring her hands under the table, and though I had only known her a matter of weeks, it was long enough for me to understand exactly what that meant.

thanks, natalie! the idea was much longer (involving the painter, and a haphazard confrontation when the painter tries to meet her first buyer), but it was a 20 minute time limit, so it got cut short. i'd like to say i'll finish it eventually, but it took something like a contest to get me to write it in the first place, so i doubt the motivation with surface anytime soon... maybe if there's a contest for like, the paris review. hehe.

it was a 20 minute time limit! if it was longer, they'd have disqualified me for length issues. as it is, they disqualified me for submitting late. hah.
