there's been a slew of articles published by the conservative contingent accusing sanger of being a eugenicist who was seeking to eliminate all racial minorities in america. they've even taken fragmented quotes from her books and papers, used out of context, to support their claims. the articles are fairly convincing but don't hold up to investigation, which is what i've done for the last three weeks. she wasn't completely innocent (by today's standards -- you have to keep in mind that her work was done in the aftermath of WWI and in a very different time), but she certainly had no intention of eliminating races. she simply thought it was ridiculous that women had no access to contraception, so their families were overcrowded, poor, and lacking proper care. it also just so happens to be the case that lower class neighborhoods tended to be populated by immigrants lacking the resources to become successful in america's economy, and because she focused on families who couldn't purchase contraceptives illegally as did the upper classes, her efforts were the greatest in ethnically populated areas.
if i had said that all out loud, you would have heard practically my entire presentation, specific examples aside. if for any reason you want the whole story, i'd be happy to pass my ten pages worth of discussion along.
excellent! the weekend after this i'm busy with graduation, but this weekend or the weekend after that i'm free -- i'll buy the drinks if you'll come down? we can drink on the beach down the street from my apartment!
ooh that sounds wonderful. i have finals on the week of june 9-12, and papers in the meantime, but the weekend before finals or right after would be great... congratulations on graduation! that is so exciting!
thank you! it's great, except that the job market is weird and scary. people aren't looking for english majors, they're looking for accountants! oof.
but either of those weekends would be great, so just give me a call whenever you feel like sitting around on lawnchairs and getting drunk, okay? 5629873809. xoxo.
