The Hills at the End of the Rainbow

This afternoon, quite late, I decided to go for a walk with Bubs. I tucked him up in his pram and off we went.

The streets were quite busy and so I headed out for the river. Above the roofs and treetops I could see the distant hills that surround Hobbiton. They were bright and green and the sky behind them was thundery-mauve. It was a beautiful contrast of colour.

As we got near the river, it started to rain. Big blobs fell heavily and so I put Bubs' raincover on his pram before continuing. The hills in the distance were still quite bright, although the tops were a bit blurry on account of the rain. We headed up the river for a bit. I watched the swan on her nest, but she never stirred, I think she might have been asleep.

Suddenly, the world became awash with rain as great sheets of it began to fall. I decided it was time to head home. We sheltered for a bit, Bubs and I, underneath the bridge before heading back through Hobbiton. I stopped off at the Kitchen shop to buy some bread and they were amazed to have a customer! As I left the shop the sky lit up bright like silver as lightning coursed through the sky and together we stood in the doorway and waited for the thunder. It followed only moments later. They asked me if I wanted to stay for a while, but, after thanking them for their kind offer, I declined on account of not knowing how long it might last.

I decided not to go hone through the park. I could vauguely remember Himself saying something about staying away from trees in thunder storms. Or was it he told me to stay near trees? I started walking back through the streets, cross with myself that I hadn't listened more carefully to his advice.

As I left the main road it started to Hail. Huge, sharp nuggets of ice thundered out of the sky and drilled into the ground. I pulled my hood down and started to race. I looked around for somewhere to shelter with the pram, but there were no doorways, nothing! The thunder and lightning continued above me a little to the right, the lightning flashing only seconds before the rumble and so I knew it was close.

I kept wondering what the odds were of being struck and that made me a little scared! I had my most precious cargo with me: my baby.

The hail hurt my face and I pulled my hood down lower. Finally, I found a doorway that could fit me and the pram. I was very grateful. Inside the doorway was a little window. Looking in, I could see into someone's hall. There was a light on and a vase of flowers on a small table. It looked all warm and comforting and the light gave off a yellow glow which was such a contrast to the sleet grey outside! I felt like knocking on a door and asking if I could shelter for a while. I imagined it to be the home of some elderly hobbits who might offer me tea and cakes.

Whilst I sheltered the whole street became a small river and water gushed constantly, as if it was in some kind of race. Suddenly, the doorway stared to flood and I knew then that it was time to go on! It was still thundering and lightning as I left and I have to admit I was a bit scared. I wheeled the pram though the torrents of water and once I got onto higher ground I stared to run! I ran all the way home, grateful everytime the lightning struck that it wasn't on us!

As I ran down our street I wondered if any neighbours were looking out and seeing me clumsily run, with the pram out front going bumpety bump!

Once inside I gave Isaac his tea and a cuddle and put him to bed. He fell asleep almost instantly, a little smile resting on his face like a summer cloud. I went downstairs and looked outside, the rain had stopped and the storm had passed. And then, the rainbow: arching over the street, way out into the hills of Hobbiton.

It was the most beautiful rainbow I had ever seen.*

*The picture doesn't do it justice, but I wanted to show you as best I could.
