This past weekend my apprentices, Cenedl, Mahault and Mahild together with Berend (Mahault's other half) took part in the Golden Seamstress Event in the Middle Kingdom. It is a 20 hour competition where teams are to create a complete outfit.
We did a 10th C Eastern Scandinavian outfit which consisted of a linen undertunic & braies, wool pants, silk tunic with hand woven trim & embroidery on the neck with buttons at the neck & wrist with lucet loops; A wool caftan with decorative stitching on the seams (herringbone and running stitch), cast buttons, caftan mounts. We made hand cast buttons, press block belt & pouch mounts, brass cutwork, viking wireweaving accessories, leg wrap hooks and other bling. We aAlso had shoes made on site & leg wraps with brass cut hooks.
The team worked great and everyone contributed - Berend and Mahault made much of the bling as well as the tools to make the bling. Mahild did gorgeous hand woven silk trim. Cenedl made a glorious hat out of hand woven linen, that was dyed and decorated with some of the silk trim and edged with fur.
All garments were hand finished & there were no exposed machine done seams. A variety of seam finishes were used from flat felling, french seams and overcast stitches. Tunic & Caftan contruction included gores and gussets. Trim was hand woven, fabric was hand died for the hat with dye we made, lucet cord done for all buttons, draw string for braies done with lucet. Basically we made everything wore and had a full book of documentation (34 pages with references) for all of it.
We worked all night and had a blast. There was no drama and do disagreements. There was lots of singing, sillyness and general revelry. I am so proud of us all and humbled by my apprentices and friends.
There were 16 teams total and we entered at the Master level. Oh all patterns were drafted on site as well. The icing on top of the day was that we won - our scores were 188 and 196 out of 200 from the sheets we got back from 2 of the judges.
It was such a blast we are already planning on defending our title next year, and want to make a prize to take well.
Thanks guys - you are the bestest.
