It took time for the pair to cross to the other side of Hogsmeade and follow the rarely-used road out to the old bridge, time enough that they managed to lose James without realizing they had done so. Students never went out that way, because for most there was nothing of interest to be found beyond the residential side of town.
Years earlier the two boys had wandered out of town and found a bridge that crossed over a deep gorge and the river far below it that fed into the lake, and ever since they had returned time and time again, just Sirius and Remus. It was a rickety footbridge, by Muggle standards, though no boards were missing and the rope was in fine shape. There was more than a little magic that protected it, too, because even in their younger years they both could feel the strength of magic that surrounded it.
Sirius waited until they were within the protection of the bridge’s magic before he transfigured back to himself, the cold and wind blocked as they stood before the wooden planks. Remus smiled softly as he glanced to his side at his friend, their fingers instinctively finding the other’s to tangle together.
“It feels different, doesn’t it?” Sirius asked softly, breaking Remus’ gaze to look out at the path in front of them.
“As if it’s all been leading up to this?” Remus felt it too, but more than just different, it felt right. As if they had always been meant to be there, in that moment, looking out over the bridge and the direction laid before them. It felt like every visit they made to the bridge was meant to bring them to that exact moment when they stood hand-in-hand.
“What is that saying, we’ll cross the bridge when we come to it?” the taller boy wondered aloud and took the first step onto the bridge. “Cross the bridge with me, Moony?”
“Of course.” Remus stepped next to him, and together they crossed the bridge. With his shoulder pressed to Sirius’ they walked, and whatever problems had happened earlier in the term, the betrayal, the worries about Sirius’ family, it was all left behind them as they reached the other side of the gorge for the first time. “We’ve never gone this far,” Remus realized with a smile as they stepped onto dirt once again at the edge of the trees.
Sirius looked startled by the realization. “You’re right… it was like something was always stopping us from going all the way across. Remember that time we said we’d make a run for it, but we got distracted about halfway and sat down to watch the river?”
Remus laughed at the memory, “I think that was the time we debated about you jumping off the bridge to see who would make it back to Hogwarts faster.”
“Probably,” the raven-haired boy smiled at him, his eyes bright with mischief. “But we never did make it across before it got dark.”
“Well we’re across now,” Remus squeezed his hand and grinned back. “Should we see where it goes?”
“Come on, then,” Sirius pulled him along as he headed straight into the forest, following the path as it twisted and turned in the fading daylight.
And Remus followed, as he always had, because in that moment he finally realized what he had known all along. His heart had always belonged to the mischievous, foolhardy boy, and he would follow him to the ends of the Earth, across every bridge and trouble, so long as they were together.
