After a long time of just sitting in silence and petting Padfoot absently, the dog finally rose, licked Remus once on the chin, and darted back towards the castle.
Remus watched after him, thinking on their friendship that had spanned almost six years, and thought yet again about why Sirius would jeopardize that for a silly prank. For as angry and hurt as he had been, he was never able to stay upset with Sirius for long, and he had already forgiven the boy.
He contemplated the wall that Sirius had been sitting on just a couple of days before. That was where he had found Sirius after Transfiguration, when Sirius had been facing expulsion. They had talked a little, for the first time since the incident, and Sirius had finally broken down and explained his thought process when everything had happened.
He had been expecting Sirius to say how much he hated Snape and how he just wanted to scare Severus a little. What he hadn’t expected however, was to find out that Severus had seen the pair of them kissing during spring quarter and was now threatening to tell Regulus and Sirius’ parents.
Sirius did not get on well with his family, of that Remus already knew, but the last thing Sirius wanted was to be outed as queer to his pureblood family. To most pureblooded families, and especially the Blacks, to have their eldest son, the heir apparent, be homosexual meant the end of the family line. In the purest of societies, to be homosexual was punishable by death. If word had gotten around that Sirius Black was seen kissing a boy, well, that would be it for Sirius. His parents would pull him from school, and Remus expected he would never see his friend again. He had told Remus about Karen Thompson and how he was only dating her so Regulus wouldn’t believe Snape when the greasy-haired git inevitably spilled the secret, and with tightly shut eyes he apologized again and again, to the point where Remus wasn’t sure who he was trying to convince.
Remus had held the larger boy and let him speak, listening closely, but never interrupting. Nearly an hour after the sun had set and they were both frozen through, Sirius’ tears and shaking had subsided and he snuggled in close to the warmth of Remus’ chest. They had stayed in that position a while longer, desperate for the comfort they were able to give each other. Eventually, though, Sirius’ wand alarm went off and their time came to an end, as good things so often do.
Remus had watched silently as he reluctantly removed his arms from around the werewolf’s skinny torso and practically had to peel himself off his friend. With his eyes fixed on the uneven ground, Sirius hurried towards the castle without looking back.
Three days later, Remus watched Padfoot do almost the exact same thing, and Remus wondered once again where Sirius had been disappearing off to.
The pair hadn’t spoken much since that day, mostly due to the fact that they hadn’t seen each other, but even when they would have seen each other in the dormitory at night, Remus only saw Padfoot. Sirus had taken to living as the large, black dog as often as possible, only being himself when he had to be in classes or interact with teachers and students. In the dormitory he was Padfoot almost exclusively, and even James and Peter had made comments about how quiet it was without Sirius around.
While they hadn’t spoken in that time, the pair spent more time together than they did apart. The first night after their talk, Remus woke from a nightmare to find a furry, warm body curled up next to him and a cool nose nuzzling the bare skin of his calf where his pajamas had been pushed up. After Remus slept through the rest of the night without dreaming, Padfoot became a permanent addition to his bed, acting as a dream guardian and chasing away the nightmares that had plagued him most of his life.
Remus remembered being alone. It was a pain that haunted his every waking moment. The fear of being alone haunted him even more so than the fear of being discovered did, but now, with Padfoot by his side, Remus wasn’t quite so scared. The future didn’t look bright, that was for certain, but there was a glowing light down the path.
