Bushfires

Feb 10, 2009 12:19

Our VC sent an email around this morning to acknowledge that staff, students and alumni from my institution have died in the recent fires. Our regional campuses are so far unscathed, but not yet out of danger. Other staff have lost their homes, and the uni is making temporary accommodation available to those affected - staff from two of our campuses have already taken up the offer.

I'm waiting to hear that my aunt in Castlemaine is safe. Other relatives, returning to Melbourne from holiday, were lucky to drive down the Hume Highway back to the city, before the road was closed. My close co-worker's parents-in-law narrowly escaped from the devastation that has destroyed their community. Another friend with relatives in Bendigo confirmed last night they are safe and well, thank goodness. I'm thankful that, so far, my family and friends have escaped or not been affected, but am conscious that for others, it's been absolutely appalling.

A staff appeal has been set up. You can also donate via the Red Cross, 1800 811 700. Donations of goods or clothes can be made to the Salvation Army.
