Back at work after a lovely week at the lake house in the middle of nowhere otherwise known as Wetumpka,Alabama.Tim Burton made Big Fish there so that gives you an idea how trapped in time this little town is. The cabin is an arts and craftsish bit of memorabilia built in the 20's on the edge of a very quiet lake. No jet skis or any other modern atrocities to ruin the illusion that there is no modern world, just us with the praying mantises and hummingbirds. I got such a goofy thrill when a piliated woodpecker flew overhead and dropped a feather on me while drawing on the deck under the pines.
Inside is an emerald green vinyl sofa that looks like a Ford Fairlane that I've seen in newspaper clippings of Dr.Martin Luther King paying a visit to The Montgomery Herald. My husband's grandfather sits across the desk from him. I wonder what was said every time I sit on it.
Nearby is a crossroad that somehow passes for a town called Slapout. Yes, it's pronounced as it sounds and no, it's not a joke.It was there that alot of the Elephant Six bands made there recordings, although I don't think Neutral Milk Hotel did. I might have sought it out had they. Man or Astroman recorded there, too. So odd. There is nothing else there to speak of.
Our Asheville yearnings may have manifested into an interesting opportunity. Breadloaf is opening a campus there and it may well be a result of my husband,Tom's, suggestion. He has a fellowship with the program, one of the most prestigious of it's types in the country, so much so that one can attain a masters by attending only the summer program. We had spent last summer there at Middlebury College in Vermont, one of the most beautiful, serene places in the country to me in the summer, but with winters that this southern girl could never handle.
Tom had suggested to the director that they open a campus there, who said that wasn't a bad idea but they had others places they were considering. Then just this week they announced they were going to Asheville after all.
I know I've said it before but sometimes all one needs to do is ask.Amazing.
