another day, another meme, this time stolen from
paperandglue. You take your top 10 most played artists from iTunes or wherever and then answer questions about them. I used my last.fm account which has been active for the last five years and as such has slightly dated results (no Jay-z? no Britney Spears' Blackout?). Humour me.
1 The White Stripes
2 Modest Mouse
3 The Beatles
4 Blur
5 Bright Eyes
6 Belle and Sebastian
7 Pulp
8 Joni Mitchell
9 Pixies
10 of Montreal
1. What was the very first song you heard by 6? (Belle and Sebastian) It's probably Stars of Track and Field off of If You're Feeling Sinister, because I used to buy albums just because a certain person recommended them to me. This certain person was always right (except for Joy Electric. I didn't like them.) Anyway, I soon fell in love with B&S so I am glad I picked up that odd red album.
2. What is your favorite album of 2? (Modest Mouse) This changes on a weekly basis, but probably Good news for people who love bad news, as it is brilliant. And an easy choice.. but there is a reason things become popular. Occasionally they are actually just really good.
3. What is your favorite lyric that 4 has sung? (Blur) I pump poison
Into my body
To forget
That I am me
It feels good
Wonderful
I forget I have feelings at all
You're dizzy
I floated up
Fifteen miles high
Stuck my head through
All the holes in our sky
I looked out across the universe
And thought of you
You're dizzy
4. How many times have you seen 5 live? (Bright Eyes) Just once, and it was HORRIBLE! I believe Xenia was there with me, Conor got drunk as hell and embarassed himself and everyone in the Horseshoe.
5. What is your favorite song by 7? (Pulp) I hate being asked to pick one of everything. My top 5 Pulp songs are 1. His n Hers; 2. She's a Lady; 3. My Legendary Girlfriend; 4. This is Hardcore; and 5. The Night That Minnie Temperley Died (because I saw its debut at Reading in a field full of Brits at 17 and it was magic).
6. What is a good memory you have involving the music of 10? (Of Montreal) Everyone hanging around the green room (mud porch) at The House (my former residence) with a bunch of people around, putting on the video for Wraith Pinned To The Mist...
7. Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad? (The Beatles) Happy songs can make me sad, if I am in the right mood. Consistently, though? Sometimes Carry That Weight makes me feel everything is useless. Are there sad Beatles songs? Maybe Hey Jude - it makes me sad to have to listen to it because I don't like it. Oh, wait: She wakes up, she makes up,
She takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry,
She no longer needs you.
And in her eyes you see nothing,
No sign of love behind the tears cried for no one,
A love that should have lasted years.
The problem with the Beatles is that they have so many songs you forget them when pressed in instances like this!
8. What is your favorite lyric that 8 has sung? (Joni Mitchell) Come on down to the Mermaid Cafe and I will buy you a bottle of wine
And we'll laugh and toast to nothing and smash our empty glasses down
Let's have a round for these freaks and these soldiers
A round for these friends of mine
Let's have another round for the bright red devil
Who keeps me in this tourist town
9. How did you get into 3? (The Beatles) Pfft. How did you get into breathing, sucker? My Dad and his friends used to have a jam room in the basement of, oh, every house we ever lived in and they used to play lots and lots of Beatles. I was the guest vocalist for Love Me Do from the age of five onward.
10. What was the first song you heard by 4? (Blur) Girls & Boys when it was played on MuchMusic in 1994, when I was living in Bobcaygeon at my Dad's Alex and Jason's house. I remember sitting on a couch in the basement with Alex and I was completely grossed out by the bald, naked people kissing in the video.
11. What is your favorite song by 1? (the White Stripes) What could it be? Fiddle dee dee.. I think it remains Hotel Yorba, it's just so lovely. I don't listen to the White Stripes as much as Last.fm would suggest, I think I end up playing it a lot when people are over because it's a little more generic than say, putting on Yoko Ono.
12. How many times have you seen 9 live? (the Pixies) Just once, but it was awesome! However, it was a bitch to get home from Mississauga.
13. What is a good memory you have involving 1? (the White Stripes) I took my brother and sister to see them last July and after eight hours in line we found ourselves front row and center in the mosh pit at the Molson Amphitheatre. I scored major Big Sister points that day!
14. Is there a song of 8 that makes you sad? (Joni Mitchell) Sometimes when I am listening to This Flight Tonight I think of my Dad and get sad: Im drinking sweet champagne, got the headphones up high
Can't numb you out, can't drum you out of my mind
They're playing goodbye baby, baby goodbye, ooh, ooh, love is blind
Up go the flaps, down go the wheels
I hope you got your heat turned on baby
I hope they finally fixed your automobile
I hope its better when we meet again, baby
15. What is your favorite album of 5? (Bright Eyes) Fevers & Mirrors because I can still listen to Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh on repeat for hours.
16. What is your favorite lyric that 3 has sung? (the Beatles) I've just seen a face I can't forget the time or place where we first met,
She's just the girl for me and I want the world to see we've met!
Had it been another day I might have looked the other ways and,
I'd have never been aware but as it is I'll dream of her tonight.
Falling, yes I am falling, and she keeps calling me back again.
I have never known the like of this I've been alone and I have, missed things and kept out of sight for other girls were never quite like this.
17. What is your favorite song of 2? (Modest Mouse) Looking kind of anxious in your cross-armed stance
Like a bad tempered prom queen at a homecoming dance
And I claim I'm not excited with my life anymore
So I blame this town, this job, these friends, the truth is it's myself
And I'm trying to understand myself and pinpoint who I am
When I finally get it figured out, I've changed the whole damn plan
18. What is your favorite song of 10? (Of Montreal) I really, really like She's a Rejector, and not just because I occasionally want to pay someone to walk up to a bitch and hit her..
19. How many times have you seen 8 live? (Joni Mitchell) Never. Andrew has, though, and I've slept with Andrew, so surely there is something in that.
20. What is your favorite album of 1? (the White Stripes) Hmmm. The White Stripes are one of those bands I mostly got into via mp3, so I never really learned which album is which. I am very partial to Elephant, though.
21. What is a great memory you have involving 9? (the Pixies) The first time I dropped acid and I sang Hey! to myself for two or three hours while staring at Jacob's shirt which we'd hung on the wall because the spiral of skull design was so trippy. I really miss acid, guys.
22. What was the first song you heard by 7? (Pulp) It was Common People and everyone in my grade 7 class loved it and I thought they were a bunch of idiots and refused to like it. If not for Disco 2000 I may never have fallen for Ver Cocker.
23. What is your favorite cover by 2? (Modest Mouse) Do Modest Mouse do covers? I can't think of any. The only thing that comes close is the song Sleepwalking (incidentally the first MM song I heard) which uses a standard guitar melody with lyrics written by Brock: I fell in love and I needed a roadmap to find out where you lived / So excited now
In other news, Threadless is having a sale and I really want this shirt:
