My grandfather died today. He was my father's father and had been sick with cancer for a long time. Last week, they set him up with hospice, saying there was nothing more they could do for him at the hospital and then today, my father was called to come because his father was dying. He was 80 years old.
I was not really close with Gramps. Much like my own father, he was not so much a touchy-feely kinda man. He was old school and tough. I called him gramps because it made him smile.
My father is really sad. Its something his children see very clearly, though he thinks he's hiding it well. He didn't get to say goodbye. He said when my grandfather died, he held out his arms and said, "God, I'm ready." Then he was gone. Just like that.
Apparently, his wishes were to be cremated with no service, no memorial or funeral, just nothing.
I need to be with my family now.
I'm going to them.
