So, anyone have suggestions as to what laptop i should get for college or where to look.
What would you suggest I avoid and what do you think will end up being pretty necessary?
Any bad laptop stories or brands or features that just suck?

Well speaking as an expert in the computer field. :p

I'd recommend you stay away from Windows Vista, I doubt whatever college you go to will require it and it's still a lot of headaches. I'd highly recommend Windows XP Professional not that Home Edition or Media Center crap.

I've had good luck with Dell's, they're bringing their support back to the US from India. HP still has most of their technical support in India. (Nothing against that, it simply is sometimes hard to understand what they're saying. Honest! I'm not being racist. lol)

Don't be afraid to shop the outlet stores, provided their from the company that made the laptop. Dell Outlet. On most things I don't recommend the extended warranty, but on computers I do. Not the accidental warranty which covers if you drop it and stuff, but the regular extended manufacturers warranty. (With Dell you can get a 3 year warranty for about $150.) My experience has been that sometime in that 3 year period you'll need something fixed.

Wireless...know that 802.11N has not become standardized yet, which means that if you have a wireless card from one company it may not work with a wireless device of another company. I'd recommend sticking with 802.11G it's standardized and widely used.

Just an FYI, you'll probably find it handy to have an external USB hard drive just to back up your stuff to. Music, movies, etc. In the event that your computer's hard drive goes wonky. You won't use it often, but put anything important that you'd need or want later on it.

Highly recommend a DVD burner.

Other than that I think you're pretty well set.
